Job description
JOB SUMMARY
Under direct supervision, learns to perform general care and provide for the physical and psychological well-being of laboratory animals used for experimental and breeding purposes.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Biological, Physical and/or Social Sciences preferred. Experience with animals, especially non-human primates preferred.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION
- Valid North Carolina driver's license.
- Technician certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conducts inventory enrichment supplies for ordering, safety and usefulness on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Prepares enrichment foods for ARP scheduled enrichment provision.
- Rotates, introduces, cleans, fills, replaces and otherwise maintains object and feeding enrichment devices for all species.
- Assists in behavioral monitoring for promotion of psychological well-being.
- Assists in pairing and/or group formation of animals.
- Assists in data collection and preparation of publication materials.
- Familiarizes with animal behaviors and animal care and use regulations to enhance the Enrichment Program.
- Operates mechanical equipment safely.
- Communicates pertinent information to clinical, supervisor and managerial personnel.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
- Good oral and written communication
- Ability to perform necessary documentation and recordkeeping
- Ability to utilize simple computer skills e.g. email, training modules
- Ability to work as part of a team; good time-management skills
- Good interpersonal/human relations skills

- Work includes weekend and holiday work schedules
- Possible exposure to outdoor elements and odors
- Exposure to animal and human pathogens and potential allergens
- Exposure to animals that can inflict bites, kick, or scratch
- Bending and lifting of cages, feed and bedding
- The need to lift, push or pull heavy objects
- Essential personnel for lab animal care
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Negative tests for active tuberculosis
