Job Summary

Dominion Energy is currently seeking an experienced structural engineer to join the Civil Design Engineering group in the corporate office in Glen Allen, VA. Depending upon experience, the successful candidate will be considered for an Engineer II or Engineer III position. Engineer II is the second level position in the progression of engineers at Dominion Energy and typically applies to engineers with at least 3 years of experience, who are fully component in all conventional aspects of the job role. An Engineer III is the top-level position in the 3-level progression of engineers at Dominion Energy. This position includes senior to expert engineers, who are able to perform difficult and complex work requiring thorough knowledge of the subject matter and significant experience within functional assignment area. The position will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyze and design structural steel and reinforced concrete nuclear power plant structures for static and dynamic loading, including Blast Loads, Tornado Loads, Seismic Loads, Load Drops, etc.
  • Prepare calculations / technical reports for the evaluation of existing structures.
  • Owner’s review of design change packages, as well as engineering analyses.
  • Interpret and apply design codes and standards as part of daily work assignments.
  • Inspections of company owned structures and facilities and prepare reports summarizing findings and recommendations.
  • Prepare construction specifications and oversee the production of structural drawings.
  • Plan and organize multiple tasks. When necessary, assist in development of project schedules and estimates.
  • Mentorship and technical guidance to less-experienced engineers.
  • Work effectively as a member of multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and written, with members of the project team and management.

Relocation may be offered to the succesful eligible candidate.


Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined below are encouraged to apply.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Ideal Engineer II / Engineer III candidates should possess a working knowledge of structural dynamics as it applies to civil engineering structures. Successful candidates should also have the ability to analyze and design frame, plate and shell type structures for extreme loads such as seismic, impact, and blast loads utilizing both linear and nonlinear analysis methods.


  • Engineer II: A minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of structural engineering is required for consideration for the Engineer II position.
  • Engineer III: A minimum of 5 years of experience in the field of structural engineering is required for consideration for the Engineer III position.

Ideal Candidates will have:

  • A working knowledge of ACI 318, ACI 349, and AISC 360 (Manual of Steel Building Design)
  • Knowledge of ANSI/AISC N690, ASCE 4, ASCE 7, and/or ASCE 43.
  • Knowledge of ASCE 58, Structural Analysis and Design of Nuclear Plant Facilities.
  • Ability to utilize various revisions of a design code or standard.
  • Experience in Heavy Loads (i.e., NUREG-0612) and Rigging / Lifting.
  • Strong leadership skills, which will allow the successful candidate to lead an engineering team on complex multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A working knowledge of Finite Element Analysis Software, such as ANSYS, SAP2000, and/or GT STRUDL.
  • Have a Professional Engineering (PE) License, or the ability to obtain a PE within 1 - 2 years.
  • Candidates with a PhD in Civil/Structural Engineering are strongly desired.
  • Application of finite element methods for frame, plate, and shell type structures.
  • The ability to perform plastic analyses, as well as experience in using software with both implicit and explicit analysis solvers.

Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will count as one year toward the year of experience. A Master's degree will count as one year toward the years of experience.


Education Requirements

Structural/Civil Engineering degree. Equivalent engineering degrees will also be considered.


For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met. Engineering Technology degrees will not be considered.

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
