We offer a hybrid work environment, allowing you to work remotely 2-3 days a week and from the office 2-3 days a week. In this role, you will serve as the primary technical voice for energy storage in business development and sales. This is a key position for developing energy storage solutions that our customers value and that enable our Development team to develop and execute effectively.

New Leaf Energy is an experienced clean energy developer that partners with landowners, policy makers, and other stakeholders to accelerate the transition to a world powered by renewable energy. We identify high-value sites, work with landowners and local communities to develop them, and partner with long-term asset owners to bring the most impactful clean energy projects to life.

About the Role
Principally, the Energy Storage Technical Lead will provide thought leadership in the development and engineering phase of a project, deploying your deep understanding of energy storage products and system optimization to identify opportunities to create more value for customers by pursuing current and soon-to-be energy storage solutions. Together with a team of development engineers, civil and electrical engineers, this role will define the solution set that differentiates New Leaf Energy’s business to develop highly valued transmission and distributed scale projects, and enable New Leaf Energy to efficiently grow our energy storage business into new market territories and applications.

The Energy Storage Technical Lead will fulfill a key leadership role on New Leaf’s energy storage team, a small, cross-functional team with responsibility and decision-making authority over New Leaf’s entire national energy storage portfolio. The Technical Lead will work closely with representatives from the project development and project finance functions to manage the performance and growth of New Leaf’s energy storage business.

In partnership with IPPs, internal stakeholders and external vendor partners, the Technical Lead will contribute to design specification, optimization, and costing of our energy storage plants to maximize New Leaf Energy’s value to our customers and reduce our costs to deliver. The Technical Lead will actively support our Development Engineering team in their goals by working closely with our engineers and clearly articulating how New Leaf Energy’s leadership in technical design creates value for our customers.

For this central and critical role, we’re seeking candidates with deep understanding of energy storage systems and solar photovoltaic design, who have proven experience optimizing such designs at commercial and utility-scale and conveying the benefits of energy storage to developers and IPPs. Familiarity with the latest and upcoming energy storage systems and project modeling will be advantageous as we seek to drive down major elements of material and labor cost through engineering design.

The ideal candidate will be a technical leader who enjoys collaboration and communication with diverse stakeholders, who can represent New Leaf Energy in both commercial and technical alignment discussions with our customer or vendor, understand the requirements of New Leaf Energy’s project delivery teams, and be able to train large groups on the merits of our designs and value proposition. To succeed in this role, you’ll need a strong ability to communicate complex commercial and technical concepts in simple terms. You’ll need both technical expertise and humility, possess a strong ability to solve problems, and be ready to learn and help others learn as well.

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Translating the specifications of OEMs into technical specifications for regional applications
  • Creating standard operating procedures and tools that empower internal stakeholders and enable them to work effectively and efficiently toward developing new projects
  • Defining and maintaining energy storage equipment standards to be used by the development engineering team
  • Collaborating with the New Leaf Energy team and vendors to maintain accurate and competitive cost models to facilitate costing for new projects
  • Providing value engineering and other technical sales support for development engineering, project developers, and the finance team
  • Supporting the evaluation of new equipment components and other direct cost reduction initiatives with key stakeholders from electrical and development engineering teams
  • Defining standard engineering deliverables that enable our project teams to dramatically improve their execution efficiency
  • Manage and solve key challenges that arise during development and create a central location to store that knowledge
  • Training new engineers on our energy storage systems and designs
  • Learning from internal customers in the office and the field, and managing closed feedback loops to continuously improve our standard product design and deliverables
  • Participating in interdisciplinary Kaizen events to improve our process
Requirements:

While no one individual will possess them all, the successful candidate will bring many of the following experiences, skills, and attributes. If you’re unsure whether you meet enough of the qualifications below but believe that your experience and skill set is a good match for this position, we invite you to apply!

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or other engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated understanding of the market for commercial and utility-scale solar engineering services
  • Experience with designing and modeling renewable energy coupled with energy storage
  • Experience and familiarity with commercially available storage technologies
  • Working knowledge of fire and building codes, electrical standards (UL/IEEE) and National Electrical Code, U.S. utility interconnection standards
