The Jackson School of Geosciences (JSG) seeks to hire a qualified candidate to fill the position of Director of the Energy and Earth Resources (EER) graduate program. EER is a 42 year old multidisciplinary Master’s degree program, unique in concept and prescient in design (

). The program emphasizes studies crossing the disciplines of geosciences, engineering, management, finance, law and policy and with the focal topics of energy and all of the earth resources impacted by and critical to energy, including water and minerals. The program is administered by the Jackson School of Geosciences and is also supported by faculty from the Cockrell School of Engineering, the LBJ School of Public Affairs, the McCombs School of Business and the Law School. EER is comprised of 45-50 graduate students, approximately 50% of whom are international. Our students include scientists, engineers and some from the social sciences (mainly business). They are highly motivated and many have previous work experience. Through their coursework and required thesis research, the students are able to tap remarkable intellectual talent across the Austin campus.

The Jackson School of Geosciences has a large and outstanding community of faculty and research scientists with a broad range of specialties and access to outstanding research facilities and support. The School includes the Department of Geological Sciences and two closely allied research units, the Institute for Geophysics and the Bureau of Economic Geology. The Bureau hosts many energy industry consortia, including the Gulf Coast Carbon Center, which for 25 years has been a leader in research on geological storage of carbon dioxide.

The position time commitment (0.75 to 1.0 FTE) is negotiable and is benefits-eligible. Salary dependent on experience. Purpose
To provide leadership and administrative oversight for the interdisciplinary Energy and Earth Resources (EER) Graduate program.
Responsibilities
  • Engage a learning community from a broad range of disciplines (science, technology, finance, and policy). The Director manages the program for students and faculty from very different educational backgrounds.
  • Manage the staffing of EER courses and approve instructors. Oversee all programming, courses, course offerings, course inventory, and teach 1-2 courses per year.
  • Mentor students with diverse interests by providing students with career advice and guidance on skills needed for industry employment. Adjudicate student grievances, grade disputes, as well as, requirements for continuing in program. In addition, the Director chairs the EER Graduate Studies Committee (GSC), the faculty governing body of the program. In this role, the Director must interact with approximately 38 faculty that comprise the GSC and with the Dean to seek their approval for key initiatives that affect the program.
  • Market the program to potential students, donors and funders by developing marketing strategy that promotes the program to students and assists students engaging in activities such as recruiting, arrival and orientation. Promote the value of EER students, as well to potential employers from diverse industries.
  • Maintain informed of new trends in education, industry and the economy to understand new directions and to tailor changes that keep the program relevant. Evaluate and propose new degree programs or changes to existing degree programs, including the potential for developing new programs. Work closely with the Graduate Advisor and GSC to evaluate the EER curriculum, establish new courses, and set degree requirements and admission standards and procedures.
  • Manage the EER budget and manage student support.
Required Qualifications
M.S. degree with at least 15 years of experience in the energy industry. Able to objectively support studies across the gamut of energy and earth resources. Able to understand new directions and to tailor new changes that keep the program relevant. Able to interact with a broad range of constituencies. This program requires interaction with students and faculty of very different educational backgrounds. The essence of this program is built around three concentrations (science / technology, finance and policy) which require that the Director be capable of engaging with a broad range of disciplines. Capable teacher, will be expected to teach 1-2 courses per year. Multi-disciplinary problem solver with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph D degree in related area. Strategic thinker, more than 15 years of experience in the energy industry. Business, commercial and international experience is preferred.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
