Nuvance Health has a network of convenient hospital and outpatient locations — Danbury Hospital, New Milford Hospital, Norwalk Hospital and Sharon Hospital in Connecticut, and Northern Dutchess Hospital, Putnam Hospital Center and Vassar Brothers Medical Center in New York — plus multiple primary and specialty care physician practices locations, including The Heart Center, a leading provider of cardiology care, and two urgent care offices. Non-acute care is offered through various affiliates, including the Thompson House for rehabilitation and skilled nursing services, and the Home Care organizations.

Summary:
Performs specific patient care activities and non-professional services (under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse), necessary to meet personal, physical and emotional needs of the population served, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult or geriatric patient and family, consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures of the Nursing Department and Medical Center Administration. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to the patient, based on the scope of services in the Department.

Responsibilities:
1.Assists in the delivery of patient care as a nursing team member by performing, in a prompt and appropriate manner, specific and nonspecific patient care tasks as directed by the nurse in charge, including (but not limited to) transport of patients as needed and assisting patients with activities of daily living.

2.Obtains and records temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, pulse oximetry, blood pressure, finger stick blood glucose accurately and reports abnormalities to primary nurse promptly.

3.Adheres to Hospital infection control practices, policies and performance improvement practices at all times. Always adheres to established safety and security precautions.

4.Collects, prepares, labels and delivers specimens to lab in a timely manner per procedure, as needed.

5.Demonstrates self-motivation by using unassigned time to perform duties and facilitate the smooth functioning of the Department.

6.Assists in initiating and discontinuing cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring.

7.Obtains EKG tracing, as requested, and submits to provider in a timely fashion.

8.Competently performs Point of Care testing and quality control testing for the following waived testing to include Accucheck, urine dipsticks, urine pregnancy, and rapid strep testing, and reports and records results in a timely manner

9.Accurately measures and fits patients for crutches and extremity splints on non- displaced fractures and/or non-fractured injuries and applies all bandages under the supervision of the RN. Extremity splints of Displaced Fractures to be applied by the physician and/or APC with assistance of the Specialty Technician.

10.Reports to primary nurse and/or charge nurse any requests, complaints or problems of the patient, as well as reports all incidents and/or potentially hazardous situations to Supervisor, Nurse Director, or designee, at the time of occurrence or discovery.

11.Assists with the continuity of patient care through harmonious working relationships with staff members and through appropriate interfacing with patient, family, and physicians. Communicates effectively and frequently with health care Team members to share information and solve problems in a positive and result-oriented manner, through timely and concise pertinent oral and/or written reports to oncoming Team members as indicated.

12.Assists in sustaining a safe environment of care by maintaining the general cleanliness and appearance of the Department and the restock of patient care supplies in assigned locations and carts.

13.Maintain and Model Nuvance Health Values.

14.Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance.

15.Performs other duties as required.

Other information:
  • Requires High School diploma or equivalent.
  • BLS Healthcare Certification
  • For initial employment, successful completion of Certified Nurse Aide Training Program and/or proof of current Certification as C.N.A. or E.M.T. is required with minimum of 6-months experience.
  • CPI Crisis Prevention Intervention within one year, based on availability of class
  • General knowledge of High School subject matter including sciences, simple medical procedures/terminology, and/or office equipment e.g. MS Excel, Presentation skills, etc.
  • Patient care experience in an acute care setting, preferred
  • Phlebotomy experience, preferred.
