Position Description

This position in the Codes Administration Department reviews approved plans and inspects new and existing electrical installations to ensure compliance with Metro Electrical Codes and other regulatory requirements.

During the 2021 fiscal year, Codes issued and tracked $5.3 billion in building permits, more than any previous year. The department concerns itself with the safety of the public as occupants in homes and buildings throughout the county, and also promotes beautiful neighborhoods through the enforcement of local codes and zoning regulations. Codes is an exciting place to work during this period of growth and construction.

Typical Duties

  • Prepares for, conducts, and follow-up on inspections of electrical installations.
  • Reviews approved plans and specifications for compliance with regulatory codes.
  • Meets with contractors, architects, engineers, and home owners on matters relating to codes regulations.
  • Inspects installations to ensure that procedures and material meet approved standards.
  • Follows up with re-inspections to verify compliance with regulations and approved plans.
  • Performs emergency re-connect inspections as needed.
  • Prepares daily field inspection reports; uses a computer to input and retrieve information.
  • Issues work stop orders for failure to comply with codes.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of electrical inspection, electrical installation, or related experience.
OR
High School Diploma and five (5) years of electrical inspection, electrical installation, or related experience.

LICENSE REQUIRED:

Valid Driver License

State of Tennessee Electrical Inspector’s Certificate

If State of Tennessee Electrical Inspector’s Certificate is not held upon application, any employee appointed to this classification shall obtain a State of Tennessee Electrical Inspector’s License within ninety (90) days from the effective date of his/her appointment.


Failure to meet the certification requirements within the ninety (90) day period shall result in automatic termination/dismissal.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of International Code Council (ICC) and related regulatory code
  • Certified Electricial Inspector (ICC)
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems
  • Knowledge of OSHA laws
  • Ability to enforce codes and regulations
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in electrical construction
