JOB SUMMARY

The Mentor Teacher is responsible in assisting the teaching staff in accomplishing appropriate classroom techniques; in coordinating, setting up, and implementing a training and technical assistance plan. Building positive relationships with teaching staff is vital. Work daily in classrooms modeling appropriate behavior for teaching staff, parents, volunteers and children.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To be familiar with Performance Standards and local written plans.
  • Be competent with content areas as they pertain to the classrooms.
  • Assuring training of all Head Start teaching staff through In-Service workshops, role modeling, and working with the staff in the classroom.
  • To demonstrate appropriate classroom techniques (in discipline, large/small group, centers, music/movement, gross motor activities, outside play, etc.). Most days will be spent in actual classrooms modeling and guiding staff
  • To be able to explain why certain techniques are important for a well-rounded learning experience.
  • To demonstrate appropriate adult interaction (i.e. between parents, parent or community volunteers, FSRs, school personnel and Specialists).
  • To be familiar with Creative Curriculum/Teaching Strategies GOLD and other Head Start curriculum and the implementation of them to provide Child Outcomes.
  • Complete the Classroom Checklist (2 times yearly) in all classrooms for curriculum compliance.
  • Train staff and sit with them to complete any paperwork, to assure they are in compliance.
  • Complete the Needs Assessment to determine what staff will be supported through coaching, and complete the action plans.
  • To fully implement the TLC groups and Practice Base Coaching to fidelity.
  • To set up a Training and Technical Assistance plan and to implement plan in conjunction with Specialists/Manager
  • To attend Pre-Service, In-Services, and other workshops that may include overnight out-of-area stays.
  • Will work in classroom in the event a sub is not available.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, stretch, lift and/or carry children weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Is responsible for reporting to the central office reason for any absences or tardiness according to procedures established in Personnel Policies.
  • Must work 80% or more in classroom working with teaching staff and children.
  • Responsible for reporting weekly itinerary and reports on classrooms, specifically noting concerns addressed.
  • Maintain congenial and respectful relations with staff, children, families and community.
  • Maintain confidentiality in regards to staff and family information.
  • Maintain objectives and professional standards.
  • Fulfill role as mandated reporter as stated in Child Abuse and Neglect Policy.
  • Follow the Guidance Procedures.
  • Be a contributory team member in a positive/productive manner.
  • Demonstrate commitment to mission, vision, and values in the performance of daily routines.
  • Provide advocacy for Head Start and children with disabilities.
  • Complete and submit monthly, quarterly and annual reports as requested
  • Follow agency Personnel Policies as established by the Board of Directors and Policy Council.
  • To perform other duties as assigned in order to meet program goals.
  • Participate in the OK Registry.
  • To ascertain the needs all children.
  • OSBI/DHS and fingerprint background check required.

SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS

In conjunction with all content area Managers, works under the general supervision of the Education Manager

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Must maintain effective and satisfactory working relationships with parents, agency personnel, and the public. Handle confidential work with tact and discretion; interpret and handle routine decisions in accordance with agency policies; follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read, interpret, and implement program guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS

Maintain a current Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field. Prefer experience in Head Start classroom setting. Automobile, valid driver’s license, current liability insurance in employee’s name, current physical and TB screening are required. Federal fingerprinting.
