Responsibilities:
The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a research scientist to perform high-resolution modeling of aerosol-cloud interactions and to develop relevant algorithms for quantum computing.

Expected tasks under this position include one or more of the following:
  • Performing large-eddy simulations to study aerosol-cloud interactions and compare to large-scale models
  • Evaluating model simulations using in-situ and remote sensing observational datasets
  • Developing quantum algorithms for nonlinear differential equations to simulate complex, multi-scale atmospheric turbulence and transport
  • Contributing to dissemination of scientific findings.
The successful candidate will contribute to multiple projects with varying modeling needs and tasks, and is expected to develop and maintain robust, clean, and easily manageable codes and scripts. Initial assignments of aerosol-cloud modeling will focus on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Familiarity with a range of model configurations (e.g., low- and high-resolution versions, domain nesting, and lagrangian LES) will be highly desirable. The tasks will be assigned to best match the selected candidate. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with scientists at PNNL, NASA, and universities.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA -OR-
  • PhD
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing observational and model datasets;
  • Fluency in Fortran and shell scripting;
  • Demonstrated experience in developing algorithms for solving nonlinear differential equations;
  • Experience with high-performance computing environments;
  • Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
  • BS with 5+ years of experience, MS/MA with 3+ years of experience, or PhD in earth, atmospheric, environmental, or other related field with 1+ year experience;
