What You'll Do as a Driver License Examiner 1:
Ohio Department of Public Safety - Bureau of Motor Vehicles/Driver Exam Services/District 4 Niles
Work Hours: Tuesday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. & Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Report in location: 5555 Youngstown-Warren Road, Unit 203, Niles, Ohio 44446
Conducts examination of applicants for vehicle operator's license by means of physically accompanying applicant in vehicle during road testing over a prescribed course; Instructs applicant in maneuvers to be performed during testing; Administers driving tests to applicants for class D license, motorcycle license, moped license, restricted license & other exams as required by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles; Evaluates & grades applicant's ability to drive; Utilize BMV computer systems to enter applicant information (e.g., name, date of birth, social security number, medical information, out of state driver license information, test scores, test appointments, etc.) & to administer knowledge tests for various license classes (e.g., Class D, moped & CDL - Class A, B, C) & endorsements (e.g., motorcycle, passenger, school bus, hazmat, doubles & triples, etc.).
Conducts written & oral tests to determine applicant's knowledge of laws & signs; Conducts eye tests to determine visual acuity; Grades tests to determine applicant's scores; Responds to inquiries concerning the examination process; Makes driving test appointments, either by phone, computer or by personal appearance at the facility; Prepares required forms, processes applications for licenses, maintains files & orders needed supplies; Helps to maintain the cleanliness of the facility; Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications
Formal education in arithmetic that includes calculating fractions, decimals & percentages & in reading, writing & speaking English; 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in human/public relations; successful completion of driver education & safety course &/or defensive driving course, instructor training course, driver license examiner course or any other related driver training course; valid Ohio Class 'D' Driver License; must be 21 years of age per Section 4507.05 (A) (2) (B).

KNOWLEDGE: Safety Practices (e.g., laws & signs applicable for operation of motorized vehicles, driver education); Public Relations; Human Relations; (*) Agency Policies & Procedures (i.e., BMV policies & procedures governing testing for & issuing of driver licenses; Government Structure & Process; Interviewing; Law (e.g., motor vehicle laws).
SKILLS: Word Processing (Microsoft Office applications, Business Application Services System (BASS); Equipment Operations (e.g., personal computer, vision machine, other testing equipment* & other office equipment {e.g., xerox, telephone}; Word Processing; Telebinocular visual activity tester.
ABILITY: Reasoning: deal with problems involving few variables in familiar context; deal with problems involving several variables in familiar context; Numerical: calculate fractions, decimals & percentages; Verbal: maintain accurate records; administer & score examinations in accordance to prescribed guidelines; handle routine telephone & in-person contact with applicants, public & other government representatives & resolve controversy with fairness; Demonstrate agility, strength & dexterity to conduct vehicle inspections & dexterity in use of hands, arms, legs & feet in all vehicles for which examinations are given.

Supplemental Information
UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Required to ride in automobiles with inexperienced drivers; exposed to dust, dirt & exhaust fumes; exposed to weather conditions when working outside; required to travel from one examination facility to another as assigned; must provide own transportation; may be required to work flexible hours.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT: Must maintain valid Ohio Class 'D' Driver License.
  • This position may be filled by a layoff or certification eligibility list.
  • This position will be filled in accordance with the applicable bargaining agreement.
