SUNY Empire seeks an innovative and future-focused Director of Student Engagement (State Title: Staff Associate), with an emphasis on virtual and blended engagement to support the university student retention and success goals. The Director will assist in developing programs, processes, procedures, and infrastructure for engaging students in online activities, organizations, and student leadership development. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for building student communities around such areas as leadership, civic engagement, career, and academic interests. This position reports directly to the Vice-Provost for Student Success and will work in collaboration with the university community to further develop the vision and direction of the student experience in support of students' professional, academic and social goals. The Director will also supervise professional staff in career services and student life, which includes virtual, blended, and in-person programming.

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborate and proactively participate as a member of the Student Success Leadership team
  • Collaborate with the student success division, academic leadership, and faculty to develop the strategic vision for the integration of social, professional, and academic interests within the online student experience with a goal of increased student retention and reduction of equity gaps.
  • Provide leadership and support of programming for online and blended activities, clubs/organizations, student leadership, professional and career development, and civic engagement, including student government
  • Lead, plan and facilitate online student communities that integrate with students' academic, professional, and social interests.
  • Collaborate with university leaders Office of Academic Affairs and Office of Enrollment Management that enhance students' online experience and remove institutional barriers.
  • Assess and evaluate student engagement programs and services in accordance with the university's requirements for strategic planning, division goals and institutional effectiveness.
  • Oversee unit budget, including student fee management and approval process
  • Supervise professional career services and student life staff with responsibilities for online, blended and in person programming.
  • Foster a student-centered culture and sense of team with direct reports and related offices
  • Partner with Alumni Affairs on relevant signature events to foster a clear pathway from student to alum

Job Requirements:


Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • 5 or more years of relevant higher education experience
  • Evidence of innovative strategies, programs and/or use of emerging tools to increase student engagement
  • Evidence of ability to communicate, engage and develop rapport with individuals of diverse cultural, social, and religious backgrounds, and varied age, gender, and sexual orientation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, communication management and design, learning design or related fields
  • Experience with online learning environment
  • Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with and influence others, both verbally and in writing.
  • Evidence of increasing online learner engagement and continuous improvement of online student experiences.
  • In-depth experience in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing new initiatives and programs
  • Experience in and/or supervision of career planning or student life
  • Commitment to access and support of diverse post-traditional student communities

Special Information:

  • This position will be located at one of the SUNY Empire's regional locations in Rochester, Saratoga Springs, New York City, or Selden, New York.

Rank/Salary:
SL4 / $70,000- $75,000
