The primary location of this position is the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

This position will be housed within the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resources at Western Carolina University and is part of the Forest Stewards outreach initiative. Forest Stewards is a non-profit Associated Entity of Western Carolina University. The Forest Stewards Program was created in 2008 with the dual mission of promoting sustainable forest management and educating the next generation of natural resource professionals. The program is active in the design, implementation, and assessment of forest management treatments on family, public, and tribal lands. The Director of Stewardship and Forestry Education will be leading these and other initiatives.

Continued employment in this position is contingent upon funding availability.

Job duties of this position include:
Director and Stewardship Forester Responsibilities:
Meet with current and potential clients to discuss management goals and objectives, conduct forest resource assessments, write management plans, and oversee implementation of management treatments. Assist Executive Director with project scheduling, budgeting, and database management.

Education Coordinator:
Provide educational opportunities for Western Carolina University students, including directing paid internships and developing experiential learning opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master of Science degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline
  • Registered Forester in North Carolina (or able to become a Registered Forester in North Carolina within 1 year)
  • Demonstrated understanding of southern Appalachian forest systems and their management
  • Demonstrated experience in the design, implementation, and assessment of forest management treatments
  • Desire to mentor university students
