This leader is responsible for managing and building a best-in-class operations team through utilization of a lean management philosophy, KPI optimization, systems modernization, and process continuous improvement.

This role is critical to the growth of PENA’s operations and professionalization of its logistics support. As PENA continues to increase its capacity for high-volume battery manufacturing, the import/export and on-site logistics demands are a critical element of PENA’s supply chain. The Director of Logistics Operations will be responsible for overseeing both on site day-to-day logistics operations and continuous improvement logistics solutions. Properly managed, these two factors will optimize flow of materials to the manufacturing lines and help support optimal production capacity.

Essential Duties:

Logistics Operations Management (20% of role)

  • Serve as senior logistics subject matter expert at the Gigafactory leading all logistics functions to include import/export, customs/trade compliance, warehousing, dock operations, returns and foreign trade zone (FTZ).
  • Manage and execute the short-term and long-term strategies to optimize all managed functions through a deep understanding of industry best practices and leading approaches of logistics management
  • Establish and lead monthly operations performance review and approval meetings that set monthly, quarterly and annual KPI objectives and performance standards with all stakeholders
  • Establish & Execute “Savings” initiatives by clarifying / outlining the value propositions, scope, timelines, key milestones along with quantifiable benefits.

Import/Export Management (30% of role)

  • Manage/monitor incoming and outgoing materials and containers from multiple locations both internationally and domestic
  • Oversee the trade/customs compliance team to ensure full compliance to all governmental and company requirements while minimizing customs/tariff exposure through consistent monitoring of HTS codes and policy changes
  • Manage logistics relationships with TESLA, customs broker, port authorities, terminal authorities, drayage providers (trucker), and Panasonic Procurement America (PPA) for a smooth logistic flow
  • Manage/monitor domestic shipments and delivery schedules and manage multiple 3PL warehouse deliveries (In & Out).
  • Adjust in-coming deliveries against sudden production changes. (Line down, natural disaster, etc.).
  • Coordinate with Japan members, local suppliers, Battery Engineer & QC team to continuously improve network designs and develop improved logistic flows

Gigafactory Logistics Operations Controls (30% of role)

  • Oversee warehousing support which manages warehouses that store and process +30,000 pallets and an inventory of $500M+
  • Create and execute Standard Operation Procedures for damaged shipment, return shipment, and out of the ordinary shipments.
  • Oversee day-to-day operation. Motivating, developing, and encouraging staff to excel and achieve a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Validate month-end closing management, to include - (Inventory management between MES, SAP, and TESLA inventory report)
  • Lead the Trade Compliance team to optimize FTZ processes and operations in partnership with TESLA
  • Serve as Sr Account leader for all logistics 3PL partners and related vendors to ensure strong voice of customer support
  • Develop robust Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) program with support of procurement colleagues to drive performance
  • In collaboration with Business Transformation team and IT, develop and implement logistics operations processes and next gen systems (WMS, TMS, track/trace, etc.) to support continuous improvement efforts and drive operational efficiencies.

Talent Management (20% of role)

  • Create and implement a high-performance culture within Logistics operations.
  • Lead by example and promote a customer focused, results driven and accountable team.
  • Provide Logistics functional expertise to guide and advise management warehousing and import/export teams, trade/customs compliance and dock teams
  • Develop talent to ensure lean continuous improvement of operations.

Promote employee development through training, project opportunities for skills expansion, and individual development plans for all team members.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements:

  • To ensure the health and safety in the workplace and for the protection of our employees, wearing PPE is a requirement for some roles at PENA and may include equipment such as a full Tyvek suit, safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, face mask, bump cap, and a full hazmat suit that includes a respirator.

Qualifications: Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Education:

  • Basic/Required:
    • Bachelors/Masters or its equivalent in Science or Business-related discipline with experience in a supply chain related area such as logistics, operational management, supply management and demand management
  • Preferred:
    • MBA or other advanced degree preferred

Essential Qualifications:

  • 12 years of relevant work experience, and combined 5 years of experience in Logistics Operations in a large multi facility cite/complex
  • Supply Chain/Logistics Certifications such as CPIM, CSCP, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expert understanding of rough-cut capacity planning activities
  • High degree of flexibility and adaptability and the ability to work calmly under pressure
  • Efficaciously implement warehousing/logistics best practices and security controls while ensuring efficient level of stock is maintained
  • Understand the levers required to deliver optimized logistics operations including conformance to plan, schedule stability, inventory parameters and flow enabled logistics
  • Strong conflict resolution and stakeholder management skills
  • Strong customer service skills including excellent verbal, written, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility and Multi-tasking capabilities
  • Strong leadership and team management capabilities
  • Strong organizational management and collaborative skills
  • Ability to communicate across all levels of the organization as well as externally to customers & suppliers
