St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, located in Crofton, Maryland, seeks a Director of Liturgical Music. This position is responsible for the planning and implementation of the liturgical music program of the parish. This position is part-time (15-19 hours/week).

The Director of Music will be responsible for the music program of St. Elizabeth Ann Parish. The director will assist the pastor, staff, and lay leaders of Seton Parish in developing a vibrant, prayerful, singing congregation through preparation, celebration, evaluation, education, and personal ministry. With the cooperation and assistance of all parish ministers, the Director of Music will support the efforts of the parish to fulfill its mission in the service of the New Evangelization by forming disciples who encounter Christ through faith, community, and service. The director must demonstrate strong leadership skills necessary to identify and retain strong teams of volunteer leaders critical to the success of parish ministry.

Essential Functions:

  • Consult with the pastor regarding the repertoire of music.
  • Responsible for playing the organ/piano and/or supplying competent musicians to do so at all liturgical celebrations on the weekends, Holy Days of Obligation, Triduum, Stations of the Cross, Christmas, Reconciliation Services, Weddings, Funerals, Thanksgiving Day and other celebrations that may be scheduled.
  • Plans music for all liturgical services.
  • Plan calendar and music schedules. Place a copy of the cantor and music schedules in the Sacristy.
  • Maintain the cantors' binder so that all music for upcoming liturgies is complete and in order.
  • Serve as director and accompanist of the 9:30 a.m. choir; plan and conduct rehearsals from mid-August through Corpus Christi.
  • Direct and maintain the curriculum and musical development of the Children’s Choir, preparing schedules and enlisting parental support.
  • Serve as accompanist, or arrange coverage for weddings and funerals.
  • Coordinate the music for funerals, including meeting with families of the deceased.
  • Coordinate the music for weddings. Maintain and update appropriate wedding music
  • Recruit, schedule, train, and evaluate cantors and music ministers.
  • Ensure availability of cantors or soloists for weddings and funerals.
  • Approve requests for accompanists, instrumentalists, and soloists other than Seton Parish personnel.
  • Prepare the annual music budget, negotiating salaries with the Pastor.
  • Schedule instrument tuning and repairs, coordinating dates with the parish Administrative Associate.
  • Have sufficient time to prepare new music, practice music from the repertoire, and peruse new materials from music publishers and other liturgical sources.
  • Continue to grow musically and spiritually by participating in workshops and seminars near Seton Parish and annual national workshops as funding allows.
  • Be pastorally and musically attentive to the needs of the Assembly so that everything encourages their full, conscious, and active participation in the liturgy.

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in Choral Directing or Liturgical Music from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience performing and directing music at the Catholic liturgy in a parish setting.

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Exhibit knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgies, church documents, and an understanding of the role of music in Catholic worship, proficiency/skill with contemporary and traditional music, readings, conducting and or accompanying skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with volunteers and staff.
  • Must be a skilled keyboard player who can play the pipe organ.
  • Must be able to get along well with people.
  • Must be attentive to details and accuracy.
  • Must demonstrate initiative and be self-motivating.
  • Must be flexible in meeting the needs of the job and able to follow directions.
