BACKGROUND

Carmen Schools of Science & Technology (Carmen) is a high performing K4 – 12 public charter management organization with a mission to graduate all students as critical thinkers and self-directed learners prepared for success in college, meaningful careers, community involvement, and family life. Carmen Schools currently operates six schools; each school is an independent charter school authorized by Milwaukee Public Schools or University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Carmen was founded in 2007 with one class of ninth grade students and has grown to educate more than 2,200 students across six schools, five campuses K4 -12th grade. POSITION SUMMARY

Carmen Schools of Science and Technology seeks a Director of School Culture and Leadership Pipeline Development (DCL) who will be responsible for leading the work to establish a caring, joyful, positive, and safe school culture at each Carmen school. The DCL will be responsible for developing and implementing systems that support Deans, Assistant Principals, Student Support Associates to grow professionally and be successful in creating joyful, positive, and caring school cultures. The DCL will partner and work closely with school leadership team members to ensure consistent implementation, lead data collection, evaluation, step backs related to school culture and climate, and establish an effective leadership development pathway program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead the work of establishing a caring, joyful, positive, and safe school culture at ALL Carmen Schools

  • Invest staff in a vision for a caring, joyful, positive, safe, and academically rigorous school environment.
  • In partnership and alignment with school leaders, lead the work of APs, school deans and student support associates.
  • Design and implement network and school wide consistent culture systems, codify in a playbook.
  • Develop onboarding and professional development supports for returning and new staff.
  • Act as a thought partner with school managers, principals and deans when planning for school culture supports and discipline issues.
  • Ensure that there are strong data systems around school culture that support both the staff and student experience.
  • Ensure there is a student-centric discipline policy that is developed cooperatively with network leadership, schools and applied consistently. Ensure that all staff are trained to follow all compliance requirements with respect to discipline and special education students.
  • Co-lead work to ensure that there is strong DEI professional development and support for staff and students across lines of difference.

Lead work in ensuring there is strong student and family engagement in school

  • Lead work to ensure there is a strong consistent advisory program and counseling for students at all levels of the organization.
  • Develop professional development and coaching tools for Advisory that can be leveraged by Deans; lead school walkthroughs and manage deans to coach teachers on implementing strong Advisory practices.
  • Develop playbook and support school leadership teams in high touch family engagement.
  • Develop partnerships and work in coordination with T&L team to make sure that students have great enrichment opportunities at schools through clubs, community service and other opportunities.
  • Maintain and update student, staff and family handbooks.

Lead the work of developing leadership pipelines and opportunities for staff to have development opportunities within Carmen

  • Research best practices and potential partner organizations that support leadership development programs for staff looking to grow within Carmen.
  • Develop Carmen philosophy and professional development arc of the year for leadership development program that supports current AP, Deans, and also provides opportunities for other aspiring leaders in the organization.
  • Work in partnership with school leadership and Talent/HR to create equitable processes for staff to have access to leadership opportunities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The DCL will be expected to spend the majority of their time at all Carmen campuses and to travel, with their own transportation, between campuses on a regular basis. Given the nature of communications, occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
