Job description

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Administration and Chief of Staff, and under general direction, the Director of Strategic Business Development serves as a strategic business development partner and senior advisor to the Dean in developing and executing financial business strategy for the School of Dentistry and UCSF Dental Center. The incumbent will identify areas of growth to achieve financial stability while ensuring the infrastructure of the clinical, research and teaching operations are effective for the execution of the business strategy.

The Director of Strategic Business Development will develop cost savings objectives and goals; authorize major purchases and negotiate contracts that range from routine to complex in nature. The incumbent will also oversee the financial strategic planning of the school by evaluating its performance and potential risks.

This position requires extensive experience in the management of complex projects, research funding, including reporting, budgeting, trend forecasting trends and long-range strategic planning. The successful candidate will have strong people leadership skills, excellent judgment, supervisory, managerial, organizational, analytical, and creative problem-solving skills, and will be a DEIB champion.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

We provide comprehensive oral health care services with over 120,000 patient visits per year. We offer a four-year DDS program as well as a two-year program for international dentists that culminates in the DDS degree. We have numerous specialty residencies, PhD, and master’s degree programs in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences, a combined DDS-PhD program, and a combined PhD-dental specialty training program. Other graduate programs include Craniofacial and Mesenchymal Biology and Bioengineering, and a DDS/MBA program. The school is one of the preeminent oral and craniofacial research enterprises in the world, ranking number one in National Institute of Health funding for 25 consecutive years.

UCSF Dental Center:
UCSF Dental Center is a cohesive entity within the structure of UCSF’s School of Dentistry that oversees and operates all clinical activities in the dental school. Its primary goal is to provide outstanding, seamless, cutting-edge patient-centered care. The Dental Center also aims to provide state of the art clinical experiences and education to students; deliver cost-effective dental health care; and generate resources for reinvestment in the School of Dentistry’s educational, clinical and scholarship missions. UCSF Dental Center’s primary services include all advanced dental specialty programs, and the general dentistry and specialty faculty practices. A majority of the Dental Center’s clinical facilities are located at the Parnassus Campus, with affiliated clinics at Buchanan Dental Center and an additional presence at Mission Bay and the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in business, healthcare, or related field and/or equivalent experience/training
  • 10+ years of management/supervisory experience
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible managerial experience in financial and budget preparation experience, in an academic, medical center or research environment
  • Academic health care experience
  • Extensive knowledge of financial policies, practices, and systems; budgeting and reporting techniques; fund accounting; human resource planning; accounting and bookkeeping
  • Strong ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels; ability to interact with diverse populations
  • Client services oriented; good listening, critical thinking, and analytical skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to evaluate processes to establish and maintain appropriate accountability structures and strong internal control elements
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills
  • Advanced knowledge in strategy development, systems planning and change management
  • Flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance and budgetary initiatives

  • Knowledge of the School’s faculty, research, clinical activities, programs, and resources to execute programmatic changes effectively
