Job Title: Director of Advancement

Salary Range: $101,000 – $140,000/yr

Status: Regular, Full-Time

Work Year: 12 months

Classification: Exempt

Supervisor: President

Summary: Reporting directly to the President, the Director of Advancement (DOA) is responsible for the strategic direction and leadership of the advancement department. The DOA is responsible for increasing Flintridge Sacred Heart’s fundraising capacity by identifying, attracting and securing non-tuition revenue in support of the goals of the school. The DOA also serves as a member of the Academy Administration, the senior management team of the school.

Supervision:

The DOA oversees a department of three, including direct supervision of the Director of Annual Fund the Special Events Coordinator, and the Advancement Coordinator. Supervisory responsibilities are full scope including recruiting, assisting in hiring, training, staff development, team building, evaluating, counseling and terminating.
The DOA is expected to foster employee development, engagement and retention.

Essential Job Functions:

Management

Oversight of development operating functions described above.
Serves as co-moderator with the Principal of Parent Groups (Parent’s Guild, Friends of the Arts and Booster Club) with regard to fundraising initiatives.
Prepares and implements annual advancement plan to ensure achievement of school strategic and operating goals.
Ensures that philanthropy and fund development are carried out in keeping with the school’s values, mission, vision and plans.

Board Administration

Manages the advancement committee of the Board of Directors and serves as staff for the board to report updates on advancement and other strategic initiatives.
With the President, determines fundraising accountability for board members and helps empower board engagement.
Capital Campaign and Major Gifts

Serves as the senior strategist in the development and implementation of major capital campaign program upon implementation.
Assures appropriate prospect research; develops a balanced funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the school that will enable it to attract, retain and motivate donors and fundraising volunteers.
Manages a substantive portfolio of major gift prospects ($25,000 and above).
Manages prospect management and tracking system, including ensuring documentation of all initiatives with major gift prospects.
Manages the development and writing of proposals and solicitation materials.
Assures the design and implementation of acknowledgment, stewardship and recognition programs with feedback and necessary check off systems.

Marketing and Communications

Works collaboratively with marketing and communications efforts designed to create awareness of Flintridge Sacred Heart’s mission, vision and goals, attract applicants, donors and foster support for the school.
Performance Management

In coordination with the CFO, oversees performance measures, monitors results and helps the President and Board of Directors evaluate the effectiveness of the school’s advancement program.
Budget Administration

In coordination with the Director of Finance and Operations, assures sound fiscal operation of the advancement function including goal setting, budget analysis, projections and variance analysis.

Other Job Functions:

Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintain accountability standards to donors, and ensure compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives.
Executes all other reasonable duties assigned by the President.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Microsoft Office: Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook functions.
Database Software: Strong working knowledge of windows-based donor software packages such as Raiser’s Edge and Greater Giving.
Fundraising: Successful track record of obtaining capital campaign gifts, including major gifts and endowment gifts through the development of deep relationships; adept at writing proposals, solicitation letters, donor correspondence and other types of materials to enhance fundraising. Ability to travel locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Must be willing to work weekends and weeknight events, as needed.
Management: Experienced in managing, motivating and developing staff.
Problem Solving and Analysis: Strong ability to identify problems, conduct appropriate analysis and reach effective solutions.
Goal Attainment: Demonstrated ability to plan, set goals and objectives, organize and implement to completion.

Learning Posture: Must maintain a learning posture, embrace change and individual and institutional growth. Expected to participate in professional development training and the annual employee retreat.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Requires a majority of time (up to 70%) to be spent sitting.
Some standing required and the ability to lift, carry and/or pull at least 10 pounds.
Adverse movements required such as reaching overhead, bending, or crouching.
Simultaneous/repetitive use of both hands is required for writing and data entry.
Excellent sensory skills are important (sight, hearing and speech).

Requirements

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required. Higher or professional degrees and/or advanced fundraising certificate preferred.
A minimum of seven years of fundraising experience with three years of management experience with increasing levels of responsibility; direct stewardship of Boards of Directors.
Substantive experience with planning, managing and successfully implementing a major capital campaign, including making cold calls, developing cultivation and solicitation strategies and closing major gifts.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range.
