Position Title: Director of Accounting
Reports To: CFO
Basic function: Oversees the operations of the accounting functions and the supervision of all Accounting employees.
Responsibilities:

  • Supervises, directs, and controls the employees responsible for all accounting transactions, including accounting payable, general ledger, account reconciliations, investments, financial statements, quarterly and annual reports, and cost reporting.
  • Ensures that work performed by subordinates is in accordance with established procedures, policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Utilizes knowledge in formulating and recording policies and procedures and in exercising independent judgment in making exceptions as required. Plans and directs the activities of the Accounting department.
  • Ensures that the Accounting functions adhere to GAAP (generally accepted accounting practices). Determines proper accounting in new or unusual situations; contributes to budgetary process of the credit union overall and is responsible for the Accounting department budgets. Interviews, recommends hiring, trains, schedules, assigns work, counsels, and makes authoritative recommendations on promotions, demotions, dismissals, and when necessary, disciplines subordinate staff members.
  • Guides implementation of new or changed procedures for work area and coordinates changes with other departments and offices. Continually reviews regulatory requirements and current procedures to ensure that policies and procedures conform with legal obligations.
  • Monitors all phases of operation, maintains appropriate records to ensure that policies and procedures are followed, goals achieved, information is complete, and accounts and reports made in a timely manner.
  • Maintains regular contact with members, staff, and management, to explain policies and procedures, answer questions, resolve problems and handle other matters beyond the scope of subordinate staff members.
Qualifications:
  • Maintains a current working knowledge for all functions supervised sufficient to back up operations as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
  • Three to five years of increasingly responsible experience in an accounting function of a financial institution. Possesses an understanding of credit union laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and overall operations.
  • Basic college level accounting courses or equivalent experience required. Bachelor's Degree in Accounting preferred.
  • Personal computer, basic office equipment.
  • Stable work history and attendance record. Ability to handle multiple priorities, analyze complex problems and work under stressful situations. Must possess leadership ability and the ability to meet, speak and deal effectively with people, being professional always. Must maintain a neat and professional appearance.
  • While the following list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented, identified physical requirements include ability to operate normal office equipment. Some lifting not to exceed 25 lbs.
