Southeastern Oklahoma State University's Native American Institute invites applications for the position of Director.

SUMMARY

Administrator in charge of Native American Institute. Responsible for academic and student services (advisement and retention activities), recruitment, and events for Native American students. Lead administrator for all aspects of federal grants related to Native American programing. The position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Grantsmanship

  • Oversight of the Native American Institute Grant.
  • Identify, apply, and maintain external grants either through public grants or private foundations.
  • Coordinate with the Offices of Business Affairs and Financial Aid to assist Native American students with identifying and applying for financial aid, scholarships, and other financial assistance.
  • Work with SE Foundation to ensure donor wishes have been met and students are maintaining eligibility. Provide information to donor if deemed necessary.
  • Maintain positive relationships with scholarship donors.

Leadership

  • Work with the AVP for Academic Affairs to establish operations that align with the mission and vision of the Native American Institute.
  • Serve as co-chair of the University’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
  • Provide effective supervision of staff.
  • Provides quality advisement and retention services, in cooperation with the Academic Advising and Outreach Center and Online and Distance Advising Center.
  • Ensure all operations in the Native American Institute operate within budget.
  • Monitor and provide reports on student retention and graduation rates of Native American students. Develop and/or refine interventions based on data.
  • Primary advisor to Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs on issues related to Native American student experience and tribal relations.
  • Oversee the selection and mentoring of Native American Scholarship recipients
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to the Native American Student Association President and support Native American student activities and associations.
  • Oversee the identification and marketing of Native American scholarship opportunities as well as the selection and mentoring of all Native American scholarship recipients.

Outreach

  • Monitor Native American enrollment. Examine emerging, unexplored, or underdeveloped markets. Develop plans to increase undergraduate and graduate enrollment based on the data.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Institutional Research to provide relevant data and statistics on Native American programming, services and students.
  • Organize and host Native American recruitment and cultural activities.
  • Inform Native American students of scholarships and grants available to them.
  • Highlight Native American activities at SE through social media and print publications.
  • Work with tribes to provide student services and space for tribal staff and activities.
  • Work with faculty and Choctaw Nation to provide and assess programing associated with Mahli Chito, including advisement of Mahli Chito students.
  • Oversee the Native American Graduation Reception, including the awarding of graduation stoles.
  • Promote and advise the Native American Student Association.
  • Support the director of the NAEIE grant through grant completion and reapplication.
  • Work with the Semple Family Museum director and curator to support the museum with events and educational programming.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs.

ADDITIONAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (FUNCTIONS, DUTIES)

4. Safety: Employee works safely, attends safety training offered/required, and follows appropriate safety rules and regulations. In relation to level of NIMs training completed, participates in incident management preparation, and performs incident duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree. 2-3 years’ experience in higher education including recruitment, academic advising or counseling young adults’ admissions or student development. History of working with or securing external funds. Familiar with tribal education programs.Demonstrated ability to interact positively and appropriately with a wide range of individuals, including Choctaw associates and management, tribal leadership, university faculty and staff, and other external constituents. Must be willing to work some nights and/or weekends. Some travel will be required.

PREFERRED: Master’s degree with a minimum of two years of relevant experience working with non-traditional and/or online students. Experience working with Native students and/or Tribal governments.

Founded in 1909 as a teachers’ college, Southeastern Oklahoma State University continues the strong tradition of producing outstanding educators for southeast Oklahoma and north Texas. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The preferred start date is April 1, 2023. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until filled.
