Job Description

Under the direction of the Association Aquatics Director, the Director of Competitive Aquatics is responsible for management and supervision of the Competitive Aquatic Department, including the management, supervision and evaluation of the swim team program. This individual is responsible for meeting the certification and training requirements necessary to be a certified swim coach in both the YMCA of the USA and USA Swimming. This individual is responsible for program, budget, personnel, and maintenance of swim team equipment, team training and competition. The incumbent must model the mission of the YMCA.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Physical Education or its equivalent in education and/or experience
  • At least 5 years’ experience coaching competitive swimming
  • Minimum Level 3 ASCA certification
  • Knowledge and experience required for the management of a competitive swim team program of 250 swimmers, hiring and supervision of assistant coaches, competitive swimming equipment and facilities, training and competition and the ability to work harmoniously with the Swim Team Parents Organization leadership and volunteers.
  • Strong Human Relations skills are required
  • The incumbent must be currently certified in First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Safety training for Swim coaches. Preferred certifications include YMCA Lifeguard, Principles of YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Hy-Tek software and good written and verbal communications are essential. Record of accomplishment of building authentic, constructive relationships with others.
Essential Functions
  • Supervise, develop and oversee operations of swim team
  • Maintain harmonious working relations with Montclair Beach Club and West Orange Township Recreation to enable team to use pools for team training.
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff. Maintain a qualified and professional staff.
  • Develops training philosophy that is physiologically appropriate for each level of competitive swimming.
  • Develops a well-rounded competitive aquatics program that develops well-rounded swimmers.
  • Responsible for total management of swim team including:
  • Meeting deadlines for meet entries,
  • Keeping accurate records of swimmers’ times,
  • Securing offsite pool time to meet training needs,
  • Making travel arrangements,
  • Arranging for year-end team banquet and awards
  • Scheduling and implementing team tryouts
  • Providing opportunities to develop new team members through stroke clinics, on and offsite
  • Assure that all competitive aquatics programs are consistent with the YMCA's mission and meet the objectives that stress good sportsmanship and the YMCA Core Values.
  • Incorporate the 40 Developmental Assets into Competitive Aquatic Programs
  • Marketing of competitive aquatics programming
  • Prepare all necessary materials and staff needed for Team Registration
  • Attend all assigned staff meetings
  • Responsible for management of competitive aquatic department annual budget
  • Represent the YMCA in a positive image and maintain relationships with cooperating organizations and community groups.
  • Implement character development and the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in all program aspects of the competitive aquatic operations

Required Certifications
