DIESEL/HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

Schenectady County’s Highway Department is looking for a Diesel/Heavy Equipment Mechanic. This is skilled work involving responsibility for efficient performance of a variety of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance tasks.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

• Performs skilled operations in making general repairs on gasoline, alternative fuel, and diesel motor equipment such as trucks, passenger cars, tractors, motorcycles, power shovels, graders and bulldozers;
• Removes, disassembles, repairs and assembles components of automotive transmissions, both standard and automatic;
• Operates machine shop equipment, including lathes, grinders, drill presses, and other metal working machines to make and repair parts for automotive equipment;
• Makes repair estimates and prepares requisitions for materials and parts for both mechanical and body repairs;
• Keeps repair and maintenance records;
• Inspects motor vehicles and heavy trucks under the New York State Motor Vehicle

Inspection Law;

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic which shall have involved electronic ignition systems, computer analyzing, use of personal computer software in automotive applications, and diesel engine work; OR

Completion of a two year automotive repair course and three years of experience as outlined above.

Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License with endorsements at time of appointment.

Pay: $26.98 per hour
