Job Description

Job Purpose Statement/s: The job of "Counselor" is done for the purpose/s of providing information on student's functioning and recommendations regarding their successful transition to and from middle school; developing plans and/or providing information regarding students' goals and achievement; provide counseling, social emotional support and intervention; and ensuring appropriate placement of students.
This is a 1.0 FTE position for the 2023-2024 school year.
Preference given to applicants with counseling experience, specifically mental health counseling, certification in middle level counseling, and a background, passion, or experience in social justice and/or equity work. The middle school counselor position manages student schedules and 504 plans, including Title 1, EL and/or LAP services. The counselor meets regularly with students experiencing trauma and stress, supports teachers when student or family issues are reported, meets with families on a regular basis, orients all new students to the school and other counseling-related duties.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Advises students, parents, and guardians for the purpose of providing information on student's progress and/or recommendations regarding their successful transition to and from middle school.
  • Coordinates with teachers, resource specialists and/or community (e.g. service clubs, courts, child protective services, etc.) for the purpose of providing requested information, gaining needed information and/or making recommendations/referrals.
  • Maintain confidential student records.
  • Support a tiered model of intervention.
  • Counsels students, parents, and guardians for the purpose of enhancing student success in school, including at-risk students and students with substance abuse problems.
  • Develops various special programs for the purpose of providing information to assist students in the successful transition from middle school to high school.
  • Monitors student records for the purpose of developing plans and/or providing information regarding students' goals and future plans.
  • Prepares documentation (e.g. observations, progress, contacts with parents, teachers, outside professionals, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support, developing recommendations and/or conveying information.
  • Presents information on various topics (e.g. behavior management, orientation, classroom presentations, etc.) for the purpose of providing required information and/or advice.
  • Collects & analyzes relevant data to build interventions for struggling students.
  • Works with at Risk Youth and understands and promotes positive school climate and culture of ethnically and socially diverse students and parent population.
  • Participate in relevant professional development to stay abreast of and implement current best practices and/or state mandates
