Job description
As a Post-Secondary Transition Coach, you will work with a cohort of about 150 students in the Next Level Scholars Program. The primary focus area of coaching is the senior year, summer melt transition, and first year of post-secondary education. Working with this cohort of students, their families, & high school advisers, you will guide them through the college application, selection, and enrollment process to ensure a smooth transition to post-secondary education. Your support continues during the first year of post-secondary education, with consistent communication, events, and initiatives.
Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars currently uses a looping coaching model with 2 full-time coaches. Each coach follows their cohort for 2 years and then is assigned to a new cohort of seniors as their previous cohort matriculates to their second year of post-secondary education.
This is a full-time grant-funded position based in Plymouth, MI.
Responsibilities:
  • Post-Secondary Planning— Coach students through their senior year post-secondary application, selection, and enrollment process.
    • Coach students through their personalized reach, match, and safety strategy for post-secondary institutions.
    • Provide reminders, coaching, and guidance to students virtually and at partner high schools regarding post-secondary applications, navigating deadlines, comparing college options and costs, etc.
    • Walk students through the college enrollment process using checklists through coaching sessions and 1:1 meetings and track milestones achieved in the student information system.
    • Assist and/or lead coordination of senior and first-year focused programming and experiences like FAFSA completion sessions, financial literacy sessions, comparing aid award letters, etc.
  • Post-Secondary Persistence – Coach students through their first year of post-secondary education to meet engagement and persistence goals. Through texting, phone calls, virtual and in-person check-ins, ensure students are meeting outlined milestones for post-secondary success.
  • Parent/Guardian Engagement— Create and manage promotional materials and campaigns to involve students’ families in the post-secondary planning and transition processes.
  • Data Collection— Work alongside the Program Team to track and report on necessary data to demonstrate student success, as well as to inform programming decisions and coaching interventions.
Qualifications:
  • Requires a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Desire to help metro Detroit students overcome hurdles to achieve a post-secondary degree.
  • Strong interpersonal, coaching and data tracking skills to inform student advising interventions.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated; able to take initiative, manage, and complete multiple tasks within deadlines and within budget.
  • Emotionally mature and be able to handle difficult and complex student situations.
  • Commitment to ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with frequently changing variables.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher).
  • Bi-lingual fluency in English and Spanish or Arabic a plus.
