Position Summary:
Mercury Broadband is expanding its fiber network and searching for talented FTTx designers to help produce high-quality designs for projects to be implemented throughout the Midwest. Candidates shall have strong knowledge of FTTx and the ability to think creatively to solve problems. Candidates may be tasked with outside plant design, drafting, GIS layouts and analysis. Responsibilities will also include direct responsibility of project production including high level and conceptual design, drafting, splice matrix and fiber assignments, GIS input, permitting, and as-builts.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Create High & Low Level Designs and costs estimates for fiber access networks.
  • Produce construction drawings from CAD and GIS based design software.
  • Understanding of and creating splice matrix and fiber assignments.
  • Support project management and General Managers on matters including timelines, milestones, deliverables, and quality control. Raise project concerns or risks to management, as necessary.
  • Knowledge of obtaining right-of-way and easements where required including investigating and acquiring easement interests in real property as well as interface with customers and other internal groups to negotiate service intervals on delayed or potentially delayed orders.
  • Understanding of OSP design, planning, construction and the ability to perform a cost analysis to determine the most cost-effective and efficient manner of the placement of communication facilities.
  • Good understanding of OSP installation and maintenance technician activities.
  • Ability to gather the necessary field information regarding aerial, buried, or underground OSP telecommunications cables and associated facilities in the design of work orders to place new network, utility poles, hand holes, terminal, cabinets, etc., or to modify the existing network.
  • Working knowledge of telecommunications network structure; deep understanding of communications engineering and related systems
  • Setting up and coordinating field work and site visits.


Skills and Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1-2 years related work experience with OSP/ISP Fiber Design
  • Experienced in OSP design of fiber optic facilities, in aerial, underground, and buried applications.
  • Working knowledge and proficiency with ESRI products, ArcGIS, and Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with Comsof or other automated design platforms preferred
  • Experience with Vetro or other GIS asset management platforms preferred
  • Ability to contribute and work well on a team
  • General knowledge of fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) networks is required


Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field, additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
