Department/Division: Patrol Division

Reports to: Undersheriff or Other Immediate Supervisor

Approved by: Sheriff Jack Laurie

POSITION SUMMARY: This position performs general law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property. Under the supervision of the Undersheriff or other direct supervisor, the Deputy will perform a variety of assignments with duties related to the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws. A deputy position typically works rotating shifts, holidays, weekends and special events as assigned. This employee will be required to exercise initiative and discretion when faced with emergency conditions. Follows objectives, directives, policies and procedures that are predetermined by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office. This work involves an element of personal danger.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Patrol areas within Atchison County; enforce federal, state and local laws; testifies in court; protect individuals and property; responds to complaints, crimes, disturbances, vehicle crashes and other related situations; reports road hazards; performs missing person searches; performs basic criminal investigations; obtains and secures evidence; takes witness statements; obtains search and arrest warrants; makes arrests of juvenile and adult offenders; transports prisoners; prepares reports; reports daily activities and specific incidents; serve civil processes and execute warrants; observes and controls vehicular traffic and enforces traffic laws; operates radar; offers assistance to citizens and visitors; may serve as animal control officer; maintains weapons; cleans and services assigned patrol vehicle; assists other law enforcement agencies; participate and initiates community policing techniques; Directs traffic; takes in-service training to attain and maintain law enforcement certification.

OTHER DUTIES: Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

Available for shift work and willingness to work additional hours as needed.

Ability to work in all weather conditions

Ability to learn and comply with applicable policies, procedures and regulations.

Ability to prioritize work assignments, calls, and correspondence

Working knowledge of, or ability to learn federal and state laws and county resolutions.

Working knowledge of, or ability to learn basic law enforcement principles and jail regulations.

Ability to learn first aid/CPR and other medical procedures and practices.

Ability to become proficient in the practices of self-defense.

Ability to learn or possess knowledge of the basic principles and techniques of photography, fingerprinting and processing of crime scenes.

Ability to learn the proper use of related law enforcement equipment.

Ability to remain calm in stressful situations, and to apply logical thinking in determining a proper course of action in a minimum amount of time. Ability to see and read reports, find evidence and work in various lighting conditions.

Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone and two-way radio.

Possesses hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to prevent violence, utilize weapons, radios and office equipment, and operate a vehicle. Ability to stand, walk, twist, kneel, sit, pinch, ride, grasp, pull, bend, crawl, push, and perform a variety of similar body movements.

Ability to perform generally moderate and occasionally heavy physical work and ability to control people and to life and carry up to 50-100 pounds.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to interact effectively with superiors, co-workers, court personnel, prisoners and the public.

Ability to remain calm in stressful situations, and to apply logical thinking in determining a proper course of action in a minimum amount of time.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent (GED); Experience involving contact with the public is desired.

SPECIALTY REQUIREMENTS: Must be 21 years of age; Must become a certified law enforcement officer by the State of Kansas within one year of appointment; must possess a valid driver’s license; must be able to qualify with handgun, rifle, & shotgun issued by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office; must meet or exceed the standards of the yearly evaluation; must be at least 21 years of age; Must be free of any criminal convictions of domestic violence, no adult felony convictions; and must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
