Are you someone who is forward-thinking, can work independently, is organized, works well with others, can establish a relationship with community partners, and is a supporter of the multidisciplinary approach to assist parents in child welfare matters? If so, you are the one we are looking for to fill our newly created Maricopa County is creating a new Dependency Prevention Attorney position.
In this role, you will lead our new Family Advocacy and Support Team (F.A.S.T.) initiative which is a program designed to assist community members with legal and resource issues prior to the filing of a dependency This is a preventative-based initiative that focuses on strengthening families by providing parents and/or families with limited and specific legal representation and connecting them to community resources or services. The goal is to stabilize families by providing them with support to avoid being involved in the child welfare system.
About the Office of the Public Defense Services
The Maricopa County Office of Public Defense Services assigns and oversees private attorneys contracted to represent indigent individuals in criminal, delinquency, dependency, mental health, and probate matters. We provide administrative support, financial oversight, integrated technology solutions, and HR support to all five of Maricopa County’s Indigent Representation offices (Public Defender, Legal Defender, Legal Advocate, Public Advocate, and Contract Counsel) in an effort to ensure indigent individuals have their fundamental rights protected and receive quality legal representation.

We Require
  • Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school
  • Five years of experience as an attorney in the area of dependency matters
  • Must be admitted to practice law and a member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license upon hire

  • Ten or more years of relevant attorney experience
  • Three years of experience in family law
  • Experience using the Team-Based Parent Representation model (multidisciplinary approach) within a dependency case
  • Experience in landlord/tenant law
  • Experience in social security and disability benefits
  • Experience or interest in how race, gender, national origin, disability, and class intersect to create disparities for individuals and families experiencing state intervention in their lives
  • A demonstrated commitment to parents’ rights, indigent defense, or social justice issues
Job Contributions
  • Consult and represent clients in specific legal actions including but not limited to landlord/tenant, benefit hearings, Order of Protection, and other family law hearings; is responsive and communicates clearly with clients who are often under great stress
  • Appear in court representing clients at scheduled hearings and trials
  • Research facts and analyzes legal issues; discuss and present analyses to clients, court personnel, and related individuals
  • Compose motions, briefs, correspondence, and other legal documents
  • Communicate in person and by phone with clients, opposing counsel, co-workers, supervisors, and others
  • Travel to courts and all other necessary locations to effectively represent clients
  • Develop educational materials and presentations for community providers; builds relationships with community providers to act as a referral source
  • Build collaborative working relationships with all child welfare stakeholders
  • Work with contracted social workers and Peer Parent Navigators to meet client’s needs
  • Provide leadership for professionals, including other attorneys, social workers, and Peer Parent Navigators
  • Attend and present at Continuing Legal Education seminars and conferences about the FAST program
  • Communicate with law schools for possible internship opportunities
Working Conditions
  • Requires travel to and from job-related locations during a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding the use of County vehicles and/or private vehicles used on County business
  • May require both national and international travel outside of a scheduled workday for case-related investigation
  • Traumatic subject matter (crime scenes, accidents, etc.), interruptions, time pressures, high volumes of work, handling multiple or complicated tasks, unscheduled tasks, frequently changing tasks, accuracy, decision making, concentration/vigilance, teamwork, working in close physical proximity with others, public contact, and overtime/rotating shifts may be a common occurrence
  • May be required to lift 15-25 pounds from floor to waist; 15 pounds waist to shoulder or shoulder to overhead, carry 15-25 pounds a distance of 100 feet or push/pull 100 pounds a distance of 100 feet
