Expanded Function Dental Assistants are responsible for providing hands-on support to the clinical team and completing prep work so they can more efficiently care for patients. Their duties include completing intake paperwork and updating patient records, taking necessary x-rays, sterilizing and organizing dental tools and assisting during dental procedures. Permitted functions vary by state.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Welcome and greet patients
• Update and maintain patient records
• Take X-rays and intraoral photos of patients
• Schedule patient appointments
• Present treatment to patients
• Assist clinicians during dental procedures
• Sterilize instruments and clean rooms and ensure all infection control policies are being followed
• Prepare operatories for patient visits
• Composites as permitted by state
• Coronal Polish
• Fluoride application as permitted by state
• Topical Anesthetic as permitted by state

Required Skills/Abilities

• Certified according to state regulations
• X-ray Certified
• Ability to move fast
• Ability to engage with patients

Education and Experience

• EFDA Certfied
• High School diploma or equivalent
• Basic knowledge of practice management software
• X-Ray Certified (depending on state)
• 2+ years in dental assisting is preferred but not required
• Able to take impressions

Physical Demands

• Is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms
• Is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.
• Has the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
• Works in moderate noise
• Sometimes moves boxes and files weighing up to 25 pounds across the office for various needs
