The Community College of Philadelphia seeks a Dean of Liberal Studies to build on the College’s numerous past successes and proud history. Community College of Philadelphia is a public, open-admission institution that provides both academic resources and support services to help students achieve their academic goals. As the largest public institution of higher education in Philadelphia, the College has served more than 685,000 of the city’s residents since 1965. Today, Community College of Philadelphia offers more than 100 associate degree, academic and proficiency certificate programs. Recent graduates continue to strengthen Philadelphia’s local economy and workforce with 85 percent of recent graduates working at a job eight months after graduating from the College were employed in the Philadelphia metro area. The College enables students to embark on a smart path to a bachelor’s degree program, with transfer agreements and partnerships to assist in the transition.

Specific Responsibilities
Reporting to the Vice President for Academic & Student Success, the Dean of Liberal Studies oversees the College’s largest division with 175 full-time faculty and nine department heads that include Art; Architecture, Design and Construction; English; Humanities; Music; Photography; Psychology; Education and Human Services; Social Science; and World Languages. There are 26 associate degree programs in the division which also houses the Fox Rothchild Center for Law and Society, the Center for International Understanding, Study Abroad, and the Liberal Arts Honors Program.

This position provides an excellent opportunity for an experienced academic leader with a true passion for the mission of community colleges to lead a team of talented faculty and staff. The next Dean must be a dynamic, innovative, collaborative, compassionate leader who will champion student success and equity and help to advance the College’s mission and strategic goals within a collective bargaining environment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned master’s degree in an academic discipline represented within the Division is required. Any and all degree(s) must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree preferred.

  • Teaching experience preferably at a community college.

  • Prior experience in a unionized environment preferred.
