General Information
The Office of Institutional Research (OIR) at James Madison University is accepting applications for an on-site Data Analytics Specialist (DAS). The DAS develops, maintains and improves procedures related to the production, processing and delivery of university data, consisting of compliance and analytic reports, studies, and ad hoc data requests for internal and external constituents. The DAS will also assist in the design, development, and maintenance of dashboards for commonly requested and widely used data in the JMU Factbook– a web-based series of visualizations.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage deadlines, collaboration, and planning necessary to respond to external data collection surveys and compliance reports (Integrated Post-Secondary Data System, State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, Common Data Set, U.S. News and others).
  • Assist with development, data validation, documentation, and data quality reviews of new and existing dashboards, visualizations, and institutional datasets.
  • Complete data projects that expand the use of descriptive and trend analyses to fulfill the office’s mission.
  • Develop appropriate data tables and/or visualizations in order to respond to ad hoc data requests.
  • Work collaboratively with JMU clients, technical staff, and fellow institutional research team members to continuously develop and improve the University’s reporting resources and processes.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as computer information systems, business administration, psychology, public policy, or a related area.
  • Relevant experience in data analytics.
  • Relevant experience using SQL for writing/developing queries and managing data.
  • Understanding of relational databases.
  • Demonstrated experience in dashboard design, development, and maintenance.
Preferred:
  • Relevant experience working in a higher education setting with knowledge of student and human resources related data and reporting processes.
  • Experience building data analytic dashboards and visualizations using Tableau.
  • Experience with database management.
  • Experience building tables in a data warehouse environment.
  • Experience supporting institutional research efforts in higher education.
  • Ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, complex, technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for visualizing data using best practices.
  • Ability to embrace and demonstrate the OIR values of continuous improvement, collaboration, and excellence.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.
  • Awareness of and commitment to the values of data privacy, security, and ethics.
  • Awareness of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the use of data for decision-making.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
