Position Specific Responsibilities
The position of Custodian is responsible for completing cleaning and stocking duties in assigned areas and may require the operation of technical equipment. Promotes “Green” cleaning and maintenance in day-to-day tasks and practices to advance healthier work environments.

Please note: This position works at the site of the former Kansas Coliseum in Park City, KS., now known as the National Institute for Aviation Research – Aircraft Structural Test and Evaluation Center (ASTEC).

Summary of Responsibilities

Performs routine manual work in cleaning, servicing, and stocking supplies in University buildings.



Essential Functions

Cleans and services assigned areas in University buildings and maintains sufficient stock and supplies for the proper performance of these duties.
Sweeps, mops, and buffs and sprays buff floors and vacuums rugs and carpets in assigned area as needed.
Cleans rest rooms, offices, and replenishes supplies.
Washes windows, walls, and other assigned areas. Picks up trash, empties garbage containers, and removes all trash to area for disposal.
Shovels and removes snow and ice from designated areas such as roofs, sidewalks and entryways as required.

Preferred Experience
One year of experience in the custodial or service industry using vacuum, dust mops, brooms, and any floor machines.
One year experience maintaining finishes of floors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to learn the operation and care of vacuum cleaners scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively with fellow workers and others.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Ability to understand and follow explicit instructions, both in oral and written form.
  • Ability and willingness to perform any of a variety of routine cleaning tasks.
