Job Summary

The facilities organization is a part of the Personnel Department with the City of Salem. We are looking for a great teammate that enjoys providing a clean and safe environment for their peers and public they serve. We encourage routine schedules and a positive work environment.

What you will do:
Our customers appreciate the duties we provide for them, some of which include interior general/special cleaning, custodial services, and minor maintenance duties of municipal facilities.

Additional information on independent job responsibilities:


  • Basic Cleaning:
    Vacuuming, emptying trash, sweeping, carpet cleaning, hard-floor waxing, and other similar custodial duties.
  • Sanitization: Restroom fixtures, door handles, and/or mopping. Cleaning up potentially infectious waste (vomit, urine, feces), duties may be performed in a closed facility and / or around the public and during public events.
  • Repair: light bulb and/or fixture replacement.
  • Exposures/Safety: Moisture, dust, fumes, chemicals, and refuse.
  • External Grounds Work: maintain landscaped areas around buildings, sweep sidewalks, shovel snow from walkways, pressure wash sidewalks/parking areas, vacuum debris, mow, weed, trim and water landscape.

  • Position schedule is Monday – Friday (5:00p.m. – 1:30a.m.), some overtime and weekend work required.
  • Eligible for night shift differential.
What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check and job fitness assessment.
  • Must have an Oregon Driver’s license and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Must pass a criminal background check necessary to obtain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance and Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) certification within 30 days of hire (clearance must be maintained throughout employment).
  • High school diploma or G.E.D., and two (2) years’ experience in custodial work indicating ability to perform duties with a minimum of direct supervision, including cleaning or minor maintenance and upkeep of work area, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.

  • Skills: custodial related equipment/supplies, follow written/oral directions, maintain records, and maintain effective working relationships with employees and members of the public.
  • Hazardous Knowledge: safety hazards and precautions needed, hazardous materials, and how/when to use different types of cleaning materials and on what surfaces.
  • Eagerness and dependability.
