Under general direction from the Custodial Supervisor III the Custodial Supervisor I directly supervises the daily activities of up to 15 custodians including training, inspecting work, timecards, ensuring the safety of staff and work procedures, and other duties in support of the department.

Duties and Responsibilities
Direct the day-to-day work and operations of custodial staff to ensure assignments are completed in a safe, effective, and efficient manner.
Supervise and direct crew through training, assessing workload demands, organizing resources, and determining priorities, methods and procedures for staff.
Monitor, maintain, and submit payroll records for processing.
Provide staff with adequate and safe machinery, equipment, and working environment.
Assist in training and in-service programs to ensure personnel gain and maintain a thorough understanding of applicable standards, safety regulations, and policies.
Conduct regular inspections of work to ensure work is performed and completed in a timely, effective and efficient manner in compliance with applicable standards, specifications, safety regulations, and departmental policies and expectations.
Conduct annual performance evaluations for assigned staff.
Coach, counsel and mentor crew regarding performance expectations.
Review prospective custodial candidates, assist with interview and reference check process, and make hiring recommendations.
Maintain detailed inventories on custodial equipment, fire extinguishers, supplies, light tubes, recycling bins, repair parts, floor surfaces, etc.
Respond to emergencies to resolve immediate safety concerns (from custodial staff and/or building occupants). Ensure custodial staff secure buildings properly, process room reservations, and report discrepancies.
Coordinate University-required training for staff and ensure timely completion.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
High school graduation or equivalent, plus progressive commercial or institutional custodial experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Demonstrated experience managing building and security policies, regulations and procedures.
Demonstrated experience following and explaining instructions, procedures, policies and regulations, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated competence organizing and prioritizing multiple work assignments, meeting deadlines, and exercising adaptability to changing priorities.
Demonstrated experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and e-mail software. Microsoft Office preferred.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
One (1) year successful work experience supervising, planning, coordinating, and directing the work activities of five or more employees.
Demonstrated competence inspecting, evaluating, and monitoring employees work activities and performance.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points). Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.

Physical Demands
Must be able to transport up to 50 pounds up and down stairs, in buildings without elevators with or without accommodation.
Position requires a person to ascend/descend ladders.
Position requires a person to safely use floor machinery.
Posses knowledge of how to use potentially toxic cleaning products safely.
Move and load heavy custodial machinery in and out of maintenance vehicles with or without accommodation.
Respond to after-hours emergency calls outs and occasional shift changes.
