General Summary

Under the direct supervision of a shift commander (Corrections Sergeant), the corrections deputy maintains all security requirements of a designated section of the correctional facility (jail). Carries out assignments as directed or in accordance with Corrections Division and Departmental policy.

Employees hired after or employed as of February 1, 2023, are eligible to receive a retention stipend of $2,500 if they remain employed as of July 31, 2023. Employees who remain employed through January 31, 2024, will receive an additional $2,500.

Essential Functions

  • Receives and processes prisoners, through the computerized booking system, fingerprinting, photographing and so forth. Accompanies prisoner to designated housing unit. Receives personal property.
  • Conducts regular floor counts and cell checks to ensure that all inmates are accounted for and properly secured. Observes inmate behavior and takes appropriate actions in case of fights, property damage or other incidents.
  • Distributes meals to inmates collects and counts dishes and eating utensils.
  • Releases inmates from cells for visits with attorneys, bondsmen, ministers, or family members.
  • Maintains a log of shift activity, prepare incident reports. Confers with prior shift members for potential problem areas.
  • Oversees inmate workers.
  • Participates in periodic searches of inmates and cells as part of the security process.
  • Provides medications and other medical care. Performs CPR and emergency First Aid when required in emergency situations.
  • As authorized, releases inmates.
  • Transports inmates to court, hospital, doctor and other correctional facilities, etc.
  • Guards inmates in hospitals, courts and other places outside the jail as required.
  • Carries out Court Officer duties when so assigned.
  • Proficient in operating a car in a safe manner.
  • Communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications, often under adverse conditions.
  • Load, unload, aim and fire handguns and other agency firearms from a variety of body positions in situations that justify the use of deadly force while maintaining emotional control under extreme stress.
  • Manage interpersonal conflicts to maintain order.
  • Perform searches of persons which involve touching and feeling to detect potential weapons and contraband.
  • Read and comprehend rules, regulations, policies, procedures and the law for the purposes of ensuring appropriate officer behavior/response and performing enforcement activities involving inmates and the public.
  • Subdue resisting subjects using hands and feet while employing defensive tactics maneuvers and approved non-lethal weapons.
Other Functions:
  • Receives requests from inmates for commissary items, obtains and records release of monies from personal property accounts. Keeps the inmates' trust accounts up to date.
  • On occasion, personally performs cleaning tasks in the jail area.
  • Assists inmates with personal needs and materials as authorized.
  • Records daily entries and periodically prepares summary reports on matters such as count, unusual occurrences and so forth.
  • Maintains records of inmate release information.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by higher authority.
  • Assist the road patrol division as directed by higher authority in times of emergency.
  • As an experienced corrections deputy, is responsible for the training of probationary officers after appropriate training in Department approved method.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalent with college courses in Corrections preferred. Must successfully complete or have completed the Michigan Sheriff Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTC) 160 hr Local Corrections Officer Academy when requested.
Experience in the Corrections field at the County level is preferred.
Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License with a good driving record. No prior felony convictions. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be able to receive and maintain a valid CPL (Concealed Pistol License).

Written Exam - Must have passed the Michigan Sheriff's Association's EMPCO Written Exam and subit documentation within 15 days of position's closing date. Information on how to register for the exam can be found at www.empco.net/msa

Oral Interview - Must successfully complete oral interview process

Good moral character - Must possess good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation covering school and employment records, the use of illegal controlled substances, state and federal fingerprint records, home environment, as well as personal traits and integrity.

Light Work: Exerting up to 30 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. In an emergency, must be capable of moving an unconscious person to safety if the situation dictates. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Must not exhibit symptoms of claustrophobia to the extent that he/she is unable to work in a closed in environment and/or cannot perform the essential functions of the job while wearing protective equipment including, but not limited to Scott Air packs.

Reaching, Handling, Fingering and/or Feeling: (Reaching - Extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.) (Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with hand or hands (fingering not involved).) (fingering - Picking, pinching or otherwise working with fingers primarily (rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling).) (Feeling - Perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture by means of receptors in skin, particularly those of finger tips).

Talking and/or Hearing: (Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word.) (Hearing - Perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)

Seeing: The ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. The important aspects of vision are:

  • Acuity, far - clarity of vision at 20 feet or more.
  • Acuity, near - clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.
  • Depth Perception - three dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.
  • Field of Vision - area that can be seen up and down or right and left while eyes are fixed on a given point.
  • Accommodation - adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye.
  • Color Vision - ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Worker must have the ability to perform the essential functions of the job at night as well as during the day and specifically must be free from a condition commonly referred to as"night blindness".

Working Conditions

The worker is subject to both environmental conditions; activities occur both inside and outside.

Hazards: Conditions or situations in which there is danger to life, health or bodily injury. this category includes a variety of physical hazards, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to burns and radiant energy, exposure to all types of explosives and exposure to toxic chemical and biological agents. Physical hazards dealing with unruly inmates.

Patrol car/van, firearms, handcuffs, fire equipment, alarms, call box, camera, telephone equipment, map, protective clothing, radio, respirator, computers, baton, taser and o.c. gas.
