ROLE SUMMARY

The ASCP Core Supervisor is accountable for day-to-day patient testing activities within multiple departments; Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, and Urinalysis. Plans, coordinates, and directs testing activities to assure sufficient quantities of supplies, reagents, and qualified staff are available to meet the standards of care as appropriate for the age of the patients served in a cost effective manner. Works with the Clinical Laboratory Manager and Director to assure compliance with all regulatory agencies. Maintains direct oversite of the Medical Technologists and Medical Technicians that work in any of the three departments under the Core Department scope.

Core supervisor is responsible for the overall activities of the laboratory in the absence of the Director and/or Manager (Weekends, Holidays, 2nd /3rd shift).


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises the work of laboratory section staff in performing routine and specialized technical procedures, including planning laboratory work, evaluating work performed, and handling procedural and technical laboratory problems within the chemistry, hematology, coagulation and urinalysis departments. Consistently maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Considers the priority and urgency of test results (STAT, ASAP, Panic Values, etc.) and reports those results within the established time frame and with documentation.
  • Develops and implements quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment and compliance with federal regulations; prepare and maintain applicable records and institutes corrective action as appropriate.
  • Ensures proper functioning of laboratory equipment by performing calibrations, preventative and corrective maintenance, and troubleshooting basic instrument malfunctions.
  • Prepares technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized, and test results. Coordinates the preparation of reports and analysis setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
  • Designs appropriate work schedules for staffing issues and the need for modified staffing plans
  • Plans daily work assignments in order to maintain adequate personnel for laboratory efficiency.
  • Coordinates student rotations to include instruction in laboratory methods and procedures.
  • Interacts with other healthcare workers to solve problems and interpret patient lab results.
  • Promotes professional growth and development of employees. Assists in fostering improvement, team work, high performance and quality.
  • Supports and participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Assists in evaluation of new methods and equipment.
  • Participates in intra-departmental and inter-departmental efforts at Continuous Quality Improvement.
  • Identifies opportunities for improving operating efficiencies.
  • Utilizes supplies and equipment adequately but not excessively.
  • Completes all relative documentation relating to the training and orientation of staff.
  • Conducts annual performance reviews for direct reports.
  • Provides coaching and mentoring to staff as appropriate. Completes all documentation required for performance issues involving manager when needed
  • Monitors time keeping, attendance and tardy levels for direct reports following Yakima Valley Memorial (YVM) policy
  • Works in conjunction with Human Resources and the Manager in interviewing, training and on-boarding, transfers, promotions and employee relations concerns.
  • Assists with the development of the various budgets as they pertain to area of responsibility and other strategic endeavor roll outs.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor’s degree that meets CLIA requirements for testing personnel required.

Experience: Minimum of four years of experience as a medical technologist in a clinical laboratory setting required. Minimum of two years of experience in assigned Clinical Lab area.

Licenses/Certificates/Registration: Registered Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent required. Washington State (DOH) Medical Assistant - Phlebotomist required if collecting blood.
