Position Summary:

Responsible for the assistance in the planning, organizing, technical operations and coordinating of the technical and administrative activities for the "core lab" designated sections (Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Hematology, Serology, Urinalysis and Coagulation) to include personnel orientation, competency, oversight of all technical aspects, technical regulatory compliance and assistance in determination of the departmental strategic direction for testing in addition to short and long range activities.

Experience:

6 years direct experience in clinical laboratory disciplines


License & Education:

New York State Medical Technologist license required.

Education in accordance with the NYS Office of Professions and CLIA requirements of testing personnel.

Essential Functions:

1. Responsible for all aspects of technical performance of personnel assigned to core lab responsibilities on all shifts. This includes but is not limited to training, initial assessment, competency evaluation and overall day to day supervision of personnel working within areas of responsibility to ensure adherence to established policy and procedure. 2. Responsible for communication to all shifts and all departmentally assigned personnel that carry out activities within the core lab area regarding any changes, updates, general information, additional special notices as needed. 3. Responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state and/or JCAHO or other requirements for activities taking place in areas of responsibility. Meets with inspecting agencies as needed and provides the information required to inspectors, agencies, assessors or to the department director. 4. Responsible for ensuring the accuracy & timeliness of all reports & testing performed in the area of responsibility. Review of patient results & overall department surveillance to ensure completeness of documentation and completion and documentation of corrective action. Proactively works to correct problems related to timeliness, accuracy, reporting requirements or format and problem solving/corrective action. 5. Responsible for full review and continued adherence to quality control, quality assurance and appropriate maintenance of all techniques and instrumentation in areas of responsibility, including correct response to instrument malfunctions. Works to correct problems with quality assurance, quality control and instruct staff regarding appropriate measures to ensure accuracy of results. 6.Responsible for assistance in planning and execution and continued upgrading of instrumentation and procedures, to include but not limited to new instrument evaluation, new testing or procedures and evaluation of the most effective methods, reagents and controls. 7. Responsible for execution of instrument maintenance, maintenance documentation, observance and correction of trends, provisions in cases of instrument failure and evaluation of instrument maintenance contract proposals. 8. Responsible for maintaining good communication with interaction and problem solving with appropriate Laboratory Directors and lab staff concerning problems, incidents and personnel issues. 9. Responsible for obtaining and collating data relevant to workload reporting and for the investigation of volumes, revenues, productivity and other cost vs. expense related items. 10. Orders and maintains adequate supplies and inventory without frequent use of short notice orders in cost effective manner. Ensures continual rotation of inventory with minimal outdating of products. 11. Develops, updates (minimum‐annually) and maintains complete understandable and workable, user‐friendly procedure manuals, orientation and competency documentation and assists with the compilation of data needed for other laboratory publications. This includes communication of changes to laboratory staff. 12. Plans, leads, attend meetings as relevant or requested, always contributing to meeting content and outcome, including helpfulness in documentation and other tasks. 13. Maintains an up to date proficiency program for all testing within section and POC units as required. 14. Performs on rotation, reviews and does remedial action with documentation as necessary for proficiency program. 15. Able to perform routine and advanced testing functions productively, competently and proficiently in all core lab disciplines. Maintains skills and proficiency with all testing in section and can assist any employee with technical or procedural problems with any testing in section. 16. Assists in provision of continuing education within the laboratory, including planning, leading and presenting material to staff. 17. Assists in evaluation of employees, both interim, annual and has an established method within section to maintain all employee’s competency. At times will be requested to have input involving disciplinary and/or counseling of employees. 18. Assists and/or determines personnel assignments or schedules both within own department and lab wide. 19. Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance at all times whether dealing with staff, patients, physicians or other customers. 20. Responsible for all duties as indicated in the Medical Technologist job description 21. May be required to work holidays, off‐shift, weekends and shifts other than what is regularly assigned. Is usually available for at least telephone consultation when not on duty for problems in the section. 22. High regard for confidential and professional information and communications Works to maintain privacy and confidentiality within hospital and department. 23. Participates fully in the Performance Improvement/Customer Service/Employee Satisfaction programs. All actions and practices incorporate the above principles and the organization’s goals. 24. Maintains up to date knowledge of right to know, infection control, hazardous materials, fire/disaster planning and is able to train and execute the above and lead others, if necessary. 25. At all times acts and communicates in a manner consistent with the organization’s goals and principles.

Maintains desired attendance level, arrives on time at start of scheduled shift and returns promptly after breaks and lunch periods. 8. Attends annual update and review education session and departmental meetings. 9. Complies with requirement for annual physical assessment within appropriate time‐ frame. 10. Maintains good inter‐ and intra‐departmental relationships, interacts effectively with all customers both internal and external. 11. Strives to conduct self in manner that positively reflects on organization. 12. Maintains current knowledge of and adheres to all departmental and organizational policies and procedures. 13. Employee supports and remains knowledgeable concerning the organizations and department’s compliance efforts to promote conformance with federal, state and private health care requirements and the ethical and business policies of the organization.
