Portland Mechanical Contractors is actively seeking experienced Controls Technician to join our dynamic team!

Summary:
Controls Technician coordinates and oversees implementation and performance testing, programming and startup of newly installed equipment and related controls that provide building efficiencies, energy improvement and computerized automation. This position requires strong networking and computer knowledge. Controls software utilizes a graphical user interface allowing the integration of all smart connected systems inside of modern buildings. We leverage our utilization of smart devices to help our customers buildings work better for them. Our technicians are the primary integrators of these systems, setting up our dynamic graphics, data collection and advanced user experiences. We work closely with customers IT departments to setup our servers, provide remote desktop protocol or remote sessions and integrate to mobile platforms.

The role provides influence and hands on engagement to develop and implement an effective building automation controls and software implementation strategy, encompassing both internal technical capabilities and external technology partnerships.

The Controls Technician duties include but are not limited to configure, set up, and test building controls systems in commercial buildings, championing safety first attitude, implementing & promoting company policies, and aiding in the training of customers.

The position reports to the Controls Project Manager.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Become proficient in areas of building controls including pneumatic, electronic, energy management systems, lighting control systems, computerized control systems, and communication networks
  • Learn to develop and write necessary software code to meet project scope, specification, or basic functional requirements
  • Test mechanical equipment operation and full function of control system components, and document and resolve all issues relating to controls and your project
  • Install and fix complex system preparation & design coordination, works with engineering group to create and/or verify point database; creates/reviews job specific programming via computer for various systems (controls, (ESS), oversees /reviews and uploads point database, and creates graphics in the Central Processing Unit (CPU)
  • Conduct implementation and performance checks on technical product support for equipment that has been newly installed
  • Complete installations of network technologies: including point database and programming operations are consistent with scope of work for the intended integration and sequence; ensures backs up data from data servers are created with automated backup procedures; troubleshoots and resolves inconsistencies in the functions or sequence of operations as needed; contacts Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for technical support as/when needed; drives issues to resolution
  • Create standard protocols set ups and configurations for PC workstations, user interfaces, data servers, IP Networking devices, routers, switches, mass storage devices and hubs
  • Confirms proper network performance and drives issues to resolution
  • Project Site Communication and Coordination: Schedules with trade contractors to coordinate startup services as needed; coordinates network drops, IP addresses and monitoring tools with customer's IT Department personnel; works with equipment vendors to coordinate communication protocols, encryption, and database requirements for integration to their systems
  • Perform Operational Testing, Verification and Acceptance: Reviews reports to analyze system operation, works with other technicians and customer (as needed) to demonstrate system operation and verify consistency with the contracted scope of work (IE Commissioning Agents or test and balance contractors, others); manages final inspection and testing; assures customer acceptance; ensures customer training on system operations
  • Ensure completion and submission of written reports
  • Explore solutions to current processes and systems. Create and implement innovative solutions leveraging a thorough understanding of the business needs, related systems, data, and resources
  • Provide stellar customer service support as necessary by responding to customer inquiries and problems in a timely manner
  • Leveraging appropriate communication strategies (email, phone call, etc.) to be highly effective member of the team
  • Performs additional accountabilities based on business necessity.

What You Need To Be Part Of Our All-Star Team:
Education/Experience:

  • Experience in controls and building automation that demonstrates proficiency in areas of HVAC controls including pneumatic, electronic, energy management systems, and computerized control systems
  • Experience in troubleshooting mechanical systems
  • Mechanical aptitude with organizational and analytical and skills
  • Ability to explain technical information to non-technical individuals
  • Exceptional computer skills including IT infrastructure, Cloud network technology, programming knowledge, graphic user interface and MS Office suite
  • A two-year degree or other education or experience by which a reasonable understanding of HVAC systems, computers, and networks, with an emphasis on direct digital control systems
  • Experience working with customers to resolve issues and build relationships that drive repeat business
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, customer-focused work environment; ability to balance workload and customers needs
  • Strong interpersonal and project management abilities, employing strong organizational skills to respond successfully to a high volume of issues and accountabilities
  • Excellent verbal, written and telephone communication skills
  • Able to work varying hours and overtime as needed
