Job description

The Controller has direct responsibilities for all Financial, Accounting, and Supply Chain functions in Retail Services. This individual promotes and safeguards the use of assets and internal controls and is expected to provide management expertise in setting business strategy and operational execution. The Controller is a member of the executive team. This individual manages cash flow, cash requirements, and has direct responsibility to coordinate the annual budgeting process. The Controller is ultimately responsible to ensure appropriate tax and asset management policies are followed.

Essential Functions

1. Leadership of Financial Services Team and Management of Accounting Practices

  • Ensures qualified accounting employees are hired, trained, and developed.
  • Follows generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Ensures timely and accurate financial data is communicated to University Financial Services.
  • Oversees the journaling of all financial and accounting data and ensures University tax policies are adhered to.
  • Ensures all customer open billing accounts are accurate and manages liability risk.
  • Conducts team meetings as necessary and ensures clear communication between team members.
  • Ensures appropriate inventory management and cycle counting practices are utilized.

2. Executive Team Membership

  • Promotes the mission, vision and values of the Retail Services.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled meetings with Executive Team to review major initiatives and strategies.
  • Provides financial perspective on all major strategic and operational activities.
  • Evaluates and consults with other college/division managers regarding operational questions and policies.
  • Provides insight into cash flow and other financial data as needed.
  • Is the financial expert on the Executive Team and ensures team members understand accounting implications as necessary.
  • Promotes/Teaches protection of university assets and effective internal controls to protect the organization and its employees.
  • Promotes collaboration between the various teams of Retail Services. Models teamwork and alignment.

3. Conducts financial and trend analysis using operational efficiency metrics

  • Regularly conducts financial analysis of each of the major expense areas of Retail Services.
  • Identifies areas where efficiency can be improved and works with leadership to develop plans for improvement.
  • Communicates cash flow and accrual impacts.
  • Has an understanding of the various systems and how data can be utilized to develop and monitor operational metrics.

4. Administers Annual Budgeting Process

  • Oversees and administers the annual budgeting and allocation process for all Retail Services units.
  • Consults with individual channel and cost center leaders on budgeting needs and provides historical data for consideration.
  • Conducts analysis of submissions and ensures budget is accurate and communicated to University Financial Services.
  • Administers annual CNA (Capital Needs Assessment) process and collaborates with Executive Team to ensure accurate information and needs are communicated.

Education/Experience

Minimum education/experience required:

BS in a financial related field and at least 10 years general accounting experience or 5 years public accounting experience, or equivalent

Preferred:

Master’s Degree in accounting AND 7+ years of retail accounting management experience.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications (please indicate whether “required” or “preferred”):

Required:

GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) certified

Familiarity with inventory management and cycle counting practices

Excellent analytical skills including trend analysis, forecasting, metric based graphing

Ability to read/interpret financial reports

Strong collaborative skills and the ability to communicate effectively with other teams

Detail oriented and possesses strong organizational skills

Able to manage time effectively and balance competing priorities

Excellent communication skills and ability to lead and inspire others

Preferred:

Computer skills: utilization of ERP (enterprise resource planning) Oracle based software to conduct trend and data analysis

Experience with POS systems

Capital Expenditure budgeting and procedures

Team building
