Control Room Operator

Covanta is seeking a Control Room Operator (CRO) to join our Covanta Montgomery, Mary Facility.

We are looking for a dedicated individual who, working under the direct supervision of the Shift Supervisor and with a team of Operators, is responsible for monitoring and control of all plant systems at the Waste to Energy plant.

This position will respond to alarms by taking appropriate corrective actions.

The CRO will execute the approved plant shut-down and start-up procedures to assure the plant meets it's operational, environmental, and safety commitments while operating in a safe and environmentally efficient manner. The CRO provides guidance to Crane, Auxiliary, and Back Plant Operators to maintain safe and efficient operation.

The successful candidate must be thoroughly familiar with boiler and turbine operations. The candidate must possess a thorough understanding of the Auxiliary Operator and Control Room Operator's duties and responsibilities.

Position Requirements

To qualify for the position, you must possess a HS Diploma/GED and have a minimum of 3 years power plant or relevant experience is required. Associate degree in a technical field or equivalent experience is preferred.

Candidate must pass the ASME QRO Provisional Licensing exam within the first year of holding the position.

Must be able to work 12 hour rotating shifts.

Basic computer knowledge, experience reading blueprints, P&ID's and schematic specifications.

Strong leadership and excellent oral and written skills, including the ability to problem solve and make good decisions. Adequate math skills to complete required job functions.

The capability to manage critical events and prioritize in an emergency, providing clear directions in operational, safety and environmental tasks.

The ability to manage crews, work in closed quarters, confined spaces, climb ladders and structures, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, sit for long periods, tolerate heights and high temperatures and to be fit tested and able to wear a respirator.

How to attend

TO FACILITY (21204 MARTINSBURG RD. DICKERSON, MD 20842)

NOTE: These are rural roads. Deer and other wildlife can run into the road. There are also speed cameras. Obey posted traffic speeds and be alert for wildlife.

From I-270, exit onto I-85 South towards Buckeystown. Follow I-85 for about 8 miles. I-85 will turn into I-28. Stay straight on I-28 (do NOT turn right towards Point Of Rocks). Continue on I-28 for about 5 miles. You will pass Dickerson Market on your left, go up a hill, and come to a flashing yellow light. Turn right at the flashing yellow light. This is Martinsburg Rd.

Once on Martinsburg Rd., the road will curve to the left after about ¼ - ½ mile. Do NOT follow the road to the left. Stay straight. It will seem like you are going into a driveway / business. There are signs for GenOn, NRG, Covanta, and others. After entering the “driveway”, go about 500 – 1000 feet. Make the first left you can make. IMPORTANT – do not go all the way to the electronic sliding gate. If you are turning left at the “Westland” sign right in front of the electronic sliding gate, you are making the wrong left turn. The left turn you want to take is just before that.

After making the left turn, go up the hill. The road will split in a “Y”. Stay to the right. Follow that road all the way to the end. You’ll come to a gate. Use the intercom to gain access from the receptionist / Control Room.
