The Office of Institutional Integrity and Awareness (formerly known as the Office of Institutional Compliance and Integrity) creates an integrity-based approach that combines compliance with an emphasis on responsibility for ethical behavior. This includes making values driven choices that are rooted in the HSC Values and Code of Culture. The office has oversight and management HSC’s Compliance Program which includes policies, clinical compliance, compliance education and training, privacy, investigations, conflict of interest and Code of Culture

Position Overview
The Compliance Department at the University of North Texas Health Science Center is seeking to hire a Compliance Specialist to join our team. This is a remote position at the Department Head discretion. The Compliance and Privacy Auditor is responsible for performing quality provider documentation audits of medical and billing records, review and monitoring of activities in accordance with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy elements as well as applicable State and Federal guidance and laws. As part of the Institutional Compliance Team, the duties of the Compliance and Privacy Auditor include, but are not limited to:

  • Identify patterns or trends and develop provider education.
  • Develop and coordinate educational and training programs regarding elements of coding such as appropriate documentation, accurate coding and coding trends found in chart reviews, etc.
  • Establish routine meetings with coders and providers to discuss findings; Revenue Cycle management as needed.
  • Provide financial analysis of revenue loss due to documentation errors.
  • Evaluate quality of clinical documentation to identify incomplete and inconsistent documentation.
  • Coordinate and assist with the investigation as needed.
  • Perform Notice of Privacy Practice (NPP) assessments; report finding and potential corrective action.
  • Ongoing review and assessment of CMS guidelines, Office of Inspector General (OIG) guidance and Federal Register.
  • Keep up to date with coding guidelines, ICD, CPT and HCPCS changes
  • Serve as a resource to leadership, providers, and employees on clinical compliance issues.
  • Provide assistance with coding inquiries
  • Assist in identifying risk as it relates to the clinical practice group; collaborate with teams in monitoring identified risk areas.
  • Serve as a compliance resource to teams and workgroups as needed to continuously improve processes designed to mitigate the risk of noncompliance.
  • Assist in the development of compliance training.
  • Provide routine reports on accuracy rates, documentation deficits and billing denials
  • Effectively communicate the compliance program throughout organization.
  • Provide rapid response to executive management requests for ad hoc analysis and reporting.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. CPC required;



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated communication, presentation, and above average oral and writing skills with ability to succinctly address issues, findings, and recommendations.
  • A strong knowledge base in complete and accurate provider documentation.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and implement regulatory standards and legal requirements.
  • Professional attitude and ability to work with and communicate effectively with all levels of management and personnel.

Preferred Qualifications
Certified in Healthcare Privacy Compliance (CHPC), preferred
RHIT or RHIA, highly preferred

Job Duties

o
Plan and conduct routine provider audits and reviews under the direction of the Director, Compliance Operations and the Senior Vice President and Chief Integrity Officer.

o
Orient and train new providers

o
Provide ongoing feedback and analysis of education needs of providers and staff.

o
Monitor activities based on privacy plan as it relates to the elements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The duties of the Compliance Specialist, HIPAA and Privacy include:
o Assist with the investigation of privacy complaints as needed
o Serve as a resource to leadership, physicians, and employees on privacy issues, Federal and state regulations.
o Develop and provide educational tools and materials to workforce on internal controls and privacy.
o Assist in identifying federal and state laws and regulations with which the UNTHSC must comply.
o Assist in the development of compliance training.
o Collaborate with teams in monitoring identified risk areas.
o Effectively communicate the compliance program.
o Serve as a compliance resource to teams and workgroups as needed to continuously improve processes designed to mitigate the risk of noncompliance.
