The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department is actively seeking a Community Activities Coordinator.

This is paraprofessional work in organizing, coordinating, and promoting community activities, programs and special events for senior adults to include enlisting, arranging, coordinating and overseeing volunteer services of individuals, groups, and organizations. Work requires knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in planning, organizing, presenting and directing groups and group activities for senior adults. Contacts require skill in understanding and influencing others and are important in providing community activities, including skills of persuasiveness, assertiveness, and sensitivity to others point of view that are required to influence behavior, change an opinion or turn a situation around. Work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by procedures or precedents, but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate technique, method, or procedure to follow. Work is performed in both office and field environments where the risks and hazards are minimal, known, predictable, and controllable. The physical demands require lifting, carrying and rearranging furnishings, displays, supplies and equipment for activities, programs and special events which includes lifting and carrying objects weighing less than 40 pounds. Operates motor vehicles. Operates standard office equipment such as personal computers using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and other related software, peripheral and electronic devices, copiers and calculators. Work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and, although subject to standard practices and procedures, the worker is permitted some latitude to set own priorities subject to superior's approval.

  • Organizes, coordinates, and promotes community activities, programs and special events.
  • Recruits, coordinates, and oversees volunteer services of individuals, groups, and organizations.
  • Surveys potential clients and plans activities to meet interests and needs.
  • Monitors compliance with regulations governing assigned activities, programs and special events.
  • Provides technical assistance and guidance on developing activities, programs and special events and in enlisting and organizing volunteer services.
  • Plans, develops, and presents programs to large groups.
  • Identifies, develops, and maintains sponsors.
  • Maintains and reports sponsorship funds and expenses.
  • Schedules and prepares facilities for activities, programs and special events.
  • Creates and sets-up information and promotional displays.
  • Responds to inquiries and provides information regarding community activities, programs, and special events.
  • Prepares correspondence and reports and completes required forms.
  • Performs first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures as required.
  • Maintains files and records.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

  • Two years of education and/or experience in organizing, coordinating, and promoting, programs and special events which includes enlisting, arranging, and coordinating volunteer services of individuals, groups, and organizations.
  • Must pass background screening on a local, state, and federal level as required by the State of Florida Children and Family Services/Elder Affairs.
Experience with senior citizen activities preferred.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION :
  • A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained.
  • Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification is required within six months of appointment and must be maintained.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • The probationary period for this class is six (6) months. This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville’s Drug Free Workplace Policy (Directive 0401).
