Position Summary: The North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center’s (the Guidance Center) Communications writer will be responsible for researching, conceiving, and writing articles, blog posts, event press releases, program brochures, newsletters, speeches, and the agency’s annual report. As a seasoned professional with strong editing skills, the communications writer will use data and best practices to promote and report on our programs and services in news outlets, journals, constant contacts and other related communications. They will assist with other copywriting and copyediting as needed. As a highly organized self-starter, an effective listener, a persuasive writer, and an exceptional communicator, they will develop creative and innovative ways to shape messaging and illustrate the agency’s work. They will collaborate with staff, clients, and families to showcase the agency’s life-changing and transformative programs and amplify the organization’s presence in the media and philanthropic communities. They will be collaborative and passionate about creatively and effectively communicating the agency’s mission, vision and values to all stakeholders. They will work very closely with the entire Development team, Board of Directors, Foundations, Corporations, all staff, sponsors and donors to help meet the organization’s strategic needs. Writing projects will also include website content, social media, and internal and external correspondence. The communications writer will handle multiple priorities at the same time with the ability to juggle several projects at once in a fast-paced, results oriented environment.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conceive, write and edit a minimum of 2 stories monthly for local news outlets.
  • Help proofread, edit, and finalize written content produced across the agency.
  • Collaborate with others to develop stories that highlight agency outreach, events, clients, and staff and adapt them for social media, agency website, and stakeholders.
  • Draft program marketing materials including flyers, brochures, invitations, reports, and general agency communications.
  • Learn the Guidance Center’s voice in order to develop and draft internal and external talking points, press releases, and marketing copy to support a cohesive, effective organizational communications strategy.
  • Assist in the creation of video scripts, social media campaigns, and other creative projects to build and support the visibility and reputation of the Guidance Center
  • Facilitate internal communications around organizational initiatives, advocacy efforts, and other strategic goals.
  • Monitor current events and trends in mental health, and other topics relevant to the Guidance Center’s mission and goals.
  • Pitch agency events and stories to print, broadcast, and online media outlets.
  • Participate in the assignments associated with a minimum of 10 events annually - 5 major external events, including annual Gala, Golf Outing and Spring Luncheon and a variety of 5 smaller events including ribbon cuttings, children’s events and “friend-raisers”.

General

  • Ability to fact-check, catch errors and correct inconsistencies.
  • Able to juggle multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining the highest standards.
  • Adept at analyzing trends and data.
  • Participate in an assortment of ad hoc or standard meetings with Board committees, event committees, staff, donors and foundations as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Development team in a weekly meeting to review tasks and schedules.
  • Available to work 10 hrs. - 15 hrs./week.
  • Manage special assignments and additional duties as needed.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree in English, Marketing or Communications preferred with a minimum of two years’ experience in working in a communications, advertising, or journalism environment.

Knowledge and skills required:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Solid organizational, written, and follow-up skills; paying close attention to details.
  • Proficiency in a variety of IT systems, applications and software – (Microsoft Office Suite - specifically Word, Outlook, and Excel; Adobe InDesign, Canva, or other design software; Zoom
  • Commitment to quality and ability to function within a team setting.
  • Approachable, with the ability to connect with all types of people across a large demographic spectrum; able to build rapport with clients, staff, and media contacts.
  • Strong familiarity with not-for-profit organizations and mental health services preferred.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $35.00 - $50.00 per hour
