Position Overview

Supervisor:Liz Johnston, Senior Grants Coordinator

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Senior Grants Coordinator in executing the communications strategy and marketing plans for Propeller. In this role, the Communications Coordinator will develop and coordinate digital and print marketing content to elevate compelling and engaging stories of native New Orleanian entrepreneurs of color and the impact of Propeller’s programming and services.

We are looking for a creative and innovative person who loves inspiring others through story and an interest in attracting entrepreneurs to engage with Propeller’s programming and coworking offerings. This person can actively collaborate across departments and coordinate project-based contractors to meet deliverables. The ideal candidate for this role has an eye for a design aesthetic aligned with Propeller’s brand standards and can assist team members and project contractors in utilizing Propeller’s brand standards. This person also holds a passion for supporting entrepreneurs of color in New Orleans and a desire to help grow the visibility of their work.

Major Responsibilities & Outcomes

Engagement Strategies

  • Develop and implement communications strategies designed to engage native New Orleanian entrepreneurs of color and raise the organization’s visibility to further the mission of the organization.
  • Assess and report on the effectiveness of communication strategies including relevant analytics for website and social media account performance and recommendations for improvement.
  • Write a variety of compelling content to support communications and marketing efforts, including newsletters, website copy, press releases, social media, etc. to engage and recruit native New Orleanian entrepreneurs of color.
  • Represent Propeller at meetings and speaking engagements, as directed.

Project Implementation

  • Manage execution of communications deliverables through project management platform, Asana, and ensure status updates are up to date.
  • Coordinate internal departments and contractors for services such as social media management, public relation management, and complex graphic design projects to meet communications strategy deliverables.
  • Ensure Propeller’s website content is kept up to date and optimized for ease of accessibility and engagement for website visitors, including developing and coordination of content updates, managing website backend, and monitoring for site improvements.
  • Manage email marketing projects across all departments, including drafting and formatting content, maintaining current, and maintaining segmented audience lists.
  • Develop and coordinate content for projects related to public relations, marketing collateral, including brief social media videos, annual reports, print marketing materials, etc.
  • Support the project management and implementation of organization events, as directed.

Travel with some evening and weekend work required. This is a salaried and exempt position.

  • Written and verbal familiarity in the history of structural racism in the US and its current manifestations in New Orleans and nationally, particularly in the area of business development. Fluency in this area is highly desired.
  • Basic to intermediate graphic design skills through a program such as Canva and an ability to translate a branding aesthetic based on a brand guide for Propeller.
  • Strong writing skills with an ability to flex communication styles based on audience.
  • Ability to interview individuals and groups and craft compelling narratives based on information captured.
  • Commitment to staying abreast of best practices and new innovations in marketing and communications.

Preferred Experience

  • Bachelor's degree related to business or equivalent knowledge + 0-2 years’ of relevant experience.
  • Experience with Google suite, Microsoft Suite, Hootsuite, Mailchimp, and Canva.
  • Experience with executing and/or managing photography and videography projects.
  • Experience working in an organization with a values-driven culture that prioritizes racial equity, diversity, and inclusion.
