Position Summary

Would you like to use your creativity and voice to support a conservation community located in a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot? If yes, the Santa Lucia Conservancy (Conservancy) is seeking a passionate, inventive, and effective storyteller, events coordinator, and media professional to join its team. As the Communications & Outreach Coordinator, you will have the unique responsibility of translating the successes of our unique conservation model into compelling stories that engage and enhance the lives of both community members who live within the 20,000-acre Santa Lucia Preserve and the larger Central Coast community.

The Santa Lucia Conservancy (Conservancy) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit land trust incorporated in 1995 to protect and steward in perpetuity the unique natural, cultural, and aesthetic resources of The Preserve and promote ecologically sensitive communities. The Conservancy is dedicated to advancing the art and science of conservation-compatible development through adaptive land management, conservation easement stewardship, ecological research, and environmental education programs.

To help accomplish its mission, the Conservancy works with various academic and environmental partners to conduct and promote land management and ecological research to increase our understanding of local natural resources and the interactions between human communities and the natural environment. The Conservancy owns and manages 18,000 acres of land within the 20,000-acre Santa Lucia Preserve through conservation easements to protect and enhance their extraordinary ecological values.

The Communication & Outreach Coordinator reports to the Executive Director and supervises contractors, seasonal interns, and volunteers.

Primary Responsibilities

Communications and Outreach (50%)

· Coordinate content for weekly blog posts, the monthly email newsletter, quarterly print newsletter, the annual impact report, social media, posters, calendar postings, and email campaigns to promote awareness about and participation in programs and activities.

· Develop and maintain media contacts for the organization to create momentum for and awareness of the Conservancy’s programs and activities, including developing social media content, writing press releases, and utilizing free media outlets.

· Provide ongoing content management of the Conservancy’s website and assist staff and Conservancy members in troubleshooting website issues.

· Collect photos and/or videos taken at Conservancy events and maintain photo files for ongoing use; create, edit, and upload photos and videos to the Conservancy website and social media outlets.

· Develop on-brand printed and digital materials and create procedures to make resources available to team and intended audiences.

· Track analytics and support internal and external data reporting needs. Ensure that all communication software is syncing systematically: MailChimp, Little Green Light, Landscape, and DonorSearch

· Create, package, and send mailers.

· Write and send a monthly communications digest to staff and board including organizational updates and analytics.

· Respond to all inquiries.

Events (25%)

· Lead the planning, outreach, and execution of Conservancy events and manage the annual calendar.

· Collaborate with partnering organizations, researchers, education contractors, and staff to host topical nature walks, ecology talks, donor cultivation events, public tabling events, and fuel management tours.

· Track and analyze participation at Conservancy events in our CRM database, Little Green Light (LGL).

Environmental Education Program Support (10%)

· Meet with education contractors regularly and work with them to set annual goals and the budget for the education program.

· Serve as the liaison/point person for the education contractors and ensure that education sites are properly cared for (e.g., pot holes, mowing, porta potties, benches, etc.).

· Order educational materials, design dual-purpose posters for the education program, and host a table at public education events.

· Work with educators to adapt the curriculum to SLC’s communications

Fund Development Support (20%)

· Support donor stewardship and cultivation strategies, including coordination of all gift acknowledgements, conducting donor prospect research and board fundraising activity.

· Organize and coordinate all philanthropy systems, files, calendars, correspondence, plans and records and report on philanthropy activity as needed.

· Support implementation and evaluation of annual philanthropy and communications plans.

· Assist with the production of all donor communications materials – both print and electronic collateral and mailings.

Administrative Support (5%)

· Attend weekly staff meetings.

· Design and order signage for the Conservancy, business cards and nametags for staff, swag for board members, merchandise for sale, and other branded items

· Occasional cross-training with field teams to engage with all program areas including Science, Ecological Management, and Easement Stewardship.

· Share in completing important tasks with team, e.g., vehicle maintenance, supply runs, taking inventory of equipment, etc.

Required Qualifications and Experience

· Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field.

· At least two years of work experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or fund development, preferably with a nonprofit organization.

· Able to effectively describe scientific topics and concepts in layperson terms to a wide range of audiences, without losing the scientific meaning and significance.

· Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills with the ability to learn and master new communication formats quickly.

· Skilled at and enthusiastic about building relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.

· Fluency in social media tools including Instagram, Facebook, Hootsuite, MailChimp, WordPress, InDesign.

· Experience with online communication tools, including Email Campaigns, Twitter and LinkedIn.

· Proficiency with web-based design applications, Microsoft Office, and Internet research required.

· Knowledge of California ecology, land management and other related fields.

· Demonstrated ability to shoot and edit photos and videos preferred.

· Passion for the outdoors/natural world.

Working Conditions/Physical Effort

· Works primarily in an office setting with regular visits to the Preserve with the larger team or to meet with Preserve residents and other stakeholders.

· Capacity to handle complex tasks under on deadline.

· Valid driver’s license, safe driving record and current insurance. A company vehicle will be available for work use.

· Occasional evening and weekend work required.

Compensation

The annual salary range for this position is $65,000 to $75,000 depending on experience and qualifications. Santa Lucia Conservancy offers a competitive benefit package including health, dental, vision, FSA, and life insurance, a 401(k) with up to a 6% employer match, 12 paid holidays, vacation, and paid sick leave.
