The Center for Black Maternal Health and Reproductive Justice (CBMHRJ) was developed as an extension of the MOTHER Lab. The vision and rationale of the CBMHRJ is to protect the Black birthing experience by advocating for quality, equitable, and respectful care in childbirth. The center seeks to create a world where Black women can safely, efficiently, and comfortably receive equitable access to healthcare services without having to navigate through racism and/or discrimination in medical settings. The CBMHRJ envisions that the interdisciplinary research center will be integrated with faculty from all Tufts schools. The main goal of the center is to foster maternal health research at Tufts University School of Medicine, with a particular focus on improving the health of Black birthing persons and their babies by reducing maternal health disparities.

The Communications Specialist is an integral member of our team responsible for executing communications strategies to promote the goals and mission of the Center. This position specializes in content creation, strategy, and operations. This person is tasked with growing digital communities through a combination of thoughtful writing, compelling visual content and proper strategy informed by insights.

Responsibilities include:

• Develops and implements an annual strategic communications plan rooted in the Center’s values, mission and goals
• Establishes communications processes for Center initiatives and programs
• Supports Director to draft press releases, media advisories, talking points, and other media materials
• Researches and writes high-quality, effective communications materials to support communications projects and strategies for Center
• Collaborates with staff on social media strategy; develops new ways to share messages with external audiences
• Manages Center website and social media content (news, updates, etc); monitors the Center’s online engagement
• Crafts engaging content for social media communications, including storytelling; develops social media toolkit
• Leverages effective design graphics and images to convey information
• Evaluates effectiveness of campaigns, makes recommendations for improvements and new initiatives
• Develops design and content for website; maintains compelling appeal and works with Web Developer on enhancements
• Creates design and layout of publications which reinforce voice of the brand and message strategy
• Formalizes templates, style guides, preferred language, key messages, and brand strategy to ensure consistency

Basic Requirements:

• 
  Knowledge and skills as typically acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree in related area of study or equivalent and 3+ years of professional health communications experience
• 3+ years of proven experience producing a wide variety of high-quality, multimedia communications products for nonprofits, academia, coalitions, and/or public health agencies
• Experience in media, website, and social media content development, design and analytics
• Must be an excellent verbal and written communicator, adept with print and digital communications as well as media relations

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced degree and experience in public health, maternal and child health, health equity, and reproductive justice education preferred
• Experience building social media channels and executing social media strategy for maximum engagement, particularly for mission-driven organizations through cause-based marketing
• Knowledge of and passion for topics arounds Black feminism and public health, reproductive justice, human rights, social sciences, and/or maternal and infant health
