Job description
Under general supervision, conducts routine inspections related to zoning, sub-standard housing and sign ordinances to ensure compliance with all codes as required by local ordinances. Communicates with general public, council, board of appeals, engineering department, tenants, rental property owners, etc.; receives and answers inquiries from general public, contractors, etc.; exercises good customer service techniques, such as listening, effective communications and problem solving. Performs inspections of residential and commercial structures and property which involves preparing list of code violations; checking property records to determine owner; prepares letter with code violations; re-inspects property to ensure compliance with codes; inspects and condemns unfit structures, etc. Conducts investigation and inspections of property conditions for illegal signs, hazardous conditions, etc.; maintains accurate records of inspections, findings and conferences with property owners and/or interested parties. Enforces county ordinances as required. Reviews architectural and engineering drawings for compliance with county codes/ordinances; prepares, processes and/or transmits a variety of information and reports; performs other duties as required. Thorough knowledge of County codes and ordinances; ability to detect code violations and make appropriate documentation; ability to prepare accurate and concise reports, documents and records; ability to read and understand complex plans, codes, laws and ordinance; knowledge and ability to operate various standard and specialized machines and equipment including a motor vehicle; ability to work in a team environment. High school graduate with extensive work experience in related field; maintain continuing education requirements to maintain required certifications. Must have experience to sufficiently deal with the public with regard to the resolution of various types of violations; must possess a valid South Carolina Driver's License. NOTE: IT IS MANDATORY THAT ALL OFFICERS OBTAIN CERTIFICATION BY ICC AS PROPERTY MAINTENANCE INSPECTOR WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF EMPLOYMENT.
