POSITION DESCRIPTION

Natividad is currently accepting applications for Clinical Laboratory Assistant positions. Under immediate to general supervision, this incumbent performs skin punctures and/or venipunctures for drawing blood for testing; performs a variety of standardized, non-technical laboratory procedures within a hospital clinical laboratory setting; operates specialized laboratory equipment and devices; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties

SIGNIFICANT DUTIES

  • Depending on area of assignment, performs skin, capillary, and/or venous punctures for blood collection in the laboratory and/or in the hospital; appropriately labels and delivers samples
  • Receives, picks up, logs, and prepares specimens for analysis in the laboratory, including surgical specimens and cultures for microbiological tests
  • Prepares, handles, and disperses laboratory specimens by centrifuging, incubating, refrigerating, preserving or otherwise meeting test requirements.
  • Performs receptionist duties and provides/receives information from patients; assigns numbers and checks for proper registration
  • Operates a variety of laboratory equipment, including waived testing devices, centrifuges, incubators, refrigerators and pipette cleaning equipment
  • Provides oral test solutions to patients
  • Inoculates test media for cultures and prepares slides; opens containers of chemical reagents and other solutions
  • Takes aliquots from urine and blood specimens; prepares and mails samples for external analysis
  • Answers questions from medical personnel regarding test collection procedures, scheduling and results.
  • Performs a variety of administrative support duties, including answering the telephone, checking work batches and monitoring phlebotomy requests, recording/tabulating data, monitoring inventory and ordering supplies, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment
  • Cleans and decontaminates glassware and work surfaces
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Examples of Experience/Education/Training

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required License: Possession of a valid CA Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II license issued by the State of California Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services. (Please ensure that the name on your license/certification either matches the name on your application or is indicated somewhere on your application, as all licenses/certifications will be verified via primary source)

Knowledge of:
  • Basic medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • The use of universal precautions in a health care laboratory setting
  • Principles and practices involved in obtaining blood samples through venipuncture- and capillary puncture methods
  • Basic functions of a hospital clinical laboratory, including routine laboratory procedures, materials, and equipment
  • Basic principles of providing customer service to patients in a health care environment
  • General clerical methods and procedures
  • Basic governmental, the Joint Commission (TJC), and College of American Pathologist standards for hospital laboratories
Skill and Ability to:
  • Perform venipunctures and capillary punctures for the purposes of drawing blood
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment; assist with laboratory testing processes
  • Accurately label samples and record information
  • Read and understand complex job-related material
  • Learn a wide range of hospital clinical laboratory procedures
  • Maintain safe working conditions by complying with established safety policies and procedures
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Operate a personal computer
  • Maintain records and compile statistics
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; prepare reports and other written communications
  • Provide sensitive and competent service to customers who may be anxious or in substantial distress
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others including physicians, nurses, administrators, managers, vendors, contractors, and other health care industry personnel
  • Work with laboratory staff and others to ensure complete and accurate laboratory results and optimal reimbursement for laboratory work performed

Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

Experience: Experience must meet current California Department of Public Health-Laboratory Field Services training and certification requirements for a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II.

Education: Experience must meet California Department of Public Health-Laboratory Field Services requirements, which currently require graduation from high school or passing a general educational development (GED) test or provide official transcripts showing credit for general education courses completed at an accredited college or university.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Natividad requires that all incumbents pass a pre-employment physical/medical assessment.
  • Natividad will conduct a thorough background and reference check process which includes a Department of Justice fingerprint check.
  • Employees who drive on County business to carry out job related duties must possess a valid CA Driver License for the class vehicle driven.
  • Employees must have and show their original Social Security Card and a valid CA Driver License or CA State ID prior to the first day of work.
  • Incumbents may be required to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays; and work with potentially hazardous and infectious substances.
