Position: Teacher 3rd Grade Teacher
Classification: Full-time, salaried Reports To: Principal
General Description: The K-8 School Teacher is a qualified professional educator who meets the requirements delineated in this job description to teach at St. Stephen Catholic Elementary School and the Archdiocese of Detroit. The teacher is hired by and directly accountable to the principal. The teacher is expected to abide by the policies and procedures of St Stephen Catholic Elementary School, the Archdiocese of Detroit, and the Office of Catholic Schools. The teacher cooperates with the principal and staff in providing an environment that promotes an academically rigorous, faith-based education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the K-8 School Teacher will include but are not limited to:
  • Maintaining state licensure by meeting the Professional Development requirements of the State of Michigan
  • Maintaining a safe, orderly, and secure learning and work environment. Follow established procedures to ensure the safety and welfare of students
  • Teaching and acting in accordance with doctrinal and moral teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Knowing, teaching, and acting consistently in accordance with the mission, philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of St Stephen Catholic Elementary School
  • Providing a grade appropriate instructional program following the curriculum of St Stephen Elementary School and the Archdiocese of Detroit, including lesson planning, classroom preparation, and assessment of each student’s performance
  • Providing grade appropriate extended or enrichment opportunities
  • Communicating regularly and effectively with parents/guardians, colleagues, and principal
  • Participating in all school and Archdioceses of Detroit in-service and training programs, and participate in all St Stephen Elementary School sponsored professional development and training programs and initiatives unless exempted or excused by principal
  • Attending all required faculty and staff meetings, unless exempted or excused by principal
  • Cooperating with the principal and staff members in school-related meetings, activities, events, and projects
  • Maintaining accurate student attendance and academic records in accordance with St Stephen Elementary School policies and procedures
  • Participating in annual performance review with the principal based upon the Charlotte Danielson model of effective instruction and other essential duties delineated here
  • Maintaining confidentiality and discretion regarding school personnel, students, and general school matters
  • Maintaining confidentiality and discretion regarding school and classroom matters
  • Performing teaching duties and all other duties as assigned by the school principal
Education and Experience:
  • Requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree
  • Requires appropriate state licensure for teaching
  • Certain endorsements may be required or preferred (e.g. ZA, Middle School)
  • Compliance with Safe Environment requirements
Competencies and Qualifications:
  • Preferred: be a fully initiated Catholic in the communion of the Catholic Church and intentionally living out the five precepts of the Church (CCC 2041-2043)
  • Refrains from promotion or approval of, or the living out of, any conduct or lifestyle that would reflect discredit or disgrace on, or cause scandal in relationship to, St. Stephen Elementary School and the Archdiocese of Detroit, or considered to be in contradiction with Catholic doctrine or morals
  • Effective student behavior management and supervisory skills
  • Effective listening and verbal communication skills
  • Must have the necessary background and training in elementary education methods and subject areas
  • Must have an understanding of child development skills necessary to relate to the students being taught
  • Must have appropriate control and discipline techniques to successfully manage a classroom
  • Must work cooperatively with school staff, administration, parishioners, and clergy
  • Must have sound judgement and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of and willingness to implement safety and emergency procedures
  • Positive references and recommendations
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check
  • Completion of “Protecting God’s Children” course through the AOD.
