Classroom Assistant-
SUMMARY OF PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Classroom Assistant takes direction from and supports the teaching staff in conducting classroom activities, maintaining classroom environment and supervising children. The Classroom Assistant may also assist in planning and record keeping as requested by the Teacher. This position also works to complete any other duties as assigned. Helps recruit potential parents by providing information to them about the various program services and benefits offered to enrolled children and families.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Safety & Sanitation
- Assists in maintaining a safe, clean, care-giving environment, practices good personal hygiene and hand washing, and assures the well-being and safety of all of the children in that environment.
- Utilizes disciplinary measures appropriately as outlined in the Behavior Guidance Policies and Procedures.
- Protects all children from physical punishment or verbal abuse by anyone in any program activity, and immediately reports any such incident to the person in charge.
- Provides for the physical safety of each child from arrival time until departure time.
- Assists in providing a healthy and safe classroom and playground environments throughout the day.
- Assures that safety and sanitation policies and procedures are followed appropriately.
- Assures that children are dressed appropriately for the weather and type of play in which they are engaged.
- Assures that children are always supervised.
- Administers First Aid and/or CPR (if trained) when necessary.
Communication
- Maintains an open, friendly, and cooperative relationship with each child and family.
- Greets children and their parents warmly and with enthusiasm.
- Maintains a cooperative attitude of working together with other staff, parents and volunteers in planning and implementing activities for the program/classroom.
- Maintains a positive, calm attitude and a pleasant, soothing voice, and models this attitude and voice for parents and others working or volunteering in the program.
Schedules, Plans and Transitions
- Implements transition activities to assist children with changes in the environment as determined by teacher.
- Follow established routines to help children gain a sense of security.
- Assists the teacher in creating intentional teaching opportunities in preparation for school readiness.
Individualizing
- Assists the classroom staff in determining the needs of children and expedites services accordingly.
- Assists the classroom staff in observations for individual children.
- Assists in the planning and conducts activities with the child that creates a developmentally appropriate and varied range of opportunities to explore and experience which meet the individual needs of the child.
Parent Contact and Involvement
- Assists in conducting parent conferences and home visits as requested.
- Assist in providing ongoing contact with families via telephone calls, notes or visits, documenting activity on contact sheets.
- Attends Parent Meetings as requested.
Bus Monitor-
SUMMARY OF PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Bus Monitor is responsible for assisting other transportation staff in the overall safety, care, and development of the young children entrusted to them. The Bus Monitor responds to the personal care and emotional needs of individual children. The Bus Monitor is also responsible for the safe, comfortable transportation of each child and the transfer of information and goods between the family and the program center. The Bus Monitor supervises the safe behavior of all children on the bus, maintains the cleanliness of the bus, and maintains the necessary supplies and information to fulfill responsibilities. Helps recruit potential parents by providing information to them about the various program services and benefits offered to enrolled children and families.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Safety, Sanitation and Maintenance
- Complies with safety, sanitation, and other guidelines for serving enrolled children (i.e. Childcare Licensing Standards, Head Start Performance Standards, and Tri-Valley policies).
- Assures that children are dressed appropriately for the weather and type of play in which they are engaged.
- Assures that all children are properly fastened into a secured child restraint seat that is labeled and adjusted for the child.
- Models and encourages appropriate health and safety habits.
- Provides a comfortable atmosphere, which prevents disruptive, unsafe behavior.
- Assists the child on and off the bus, and to and from his/her seat as needed.
- Releases young children into the care of their parent or guardian designated by the parent according to program policy.
- Administers First Aid and/or CPR when necessary.
- Maintains adequately supplied First Aid and Biohazard kits.
- Is knowledgeable of and complies with approved procedures for various emergency situations.
- Reports all incidents and completes incident reports as needed to the Center Director.Informs the nurse and the parents of any injuries.
- Maintains a bus that is clean and well supplied according to transportation procedures.
- Assures that children are supervised at all times.
- Maintains, cleans, and disinfects child restraint seats.
- Assists in the cleaning of the vehicle’s interior as needed.
- Properly installs and removes child restraint seats as needed.
- Maintains an inventory of all child restraint systems and belts, updates this inventory at the end of the program.
Information and Communication
- Organizes and maintains Bus Communication Binder, ensuring that all bus and center information is accurate and up to date.
- Maintains a current record of the route and the children who are to be picked up and dropped off at each stop.
- Maintains route attendance and assures that all children are off the bus at the end of each route.
- Assures the transfer of information, supplies, and medication between home and center.
Schedules, Plans and Transitions
- Assists the Center Manager and bus driver in developing a bus route that, when possible, remains within a one hour time frame.
- Provides predictable routines to help children gain a sense of security.
Individualizing
- Provides consistent care to the children.
- Assists teaching staff in the maintenance and documentation of communication with families.
- Respect children’s individual differences.
Communication
- Assists in providing an environment that encourages verbal interaction.
- Promotes interactions with other children, encouraging use of words.
- Encourages expression of feelings.
- Engages in conversation in child’s language of choice as much as possible.
Guidance
- Encourages problem solving.
- Provides opportunities for children to become self-assertive.
- Provides opportunities for children to develop self-help skills.
- Sets reasonable and appropriate limits and rules for the bus and explains why.
- Informs, reminds, and assists children in learning appropriate behavior.
Self-Esteem
- Provides opportunities for children to solve problems on their own.
- Uses daily routines to help children master skills and feel competent.
- Supports and encourages children’s natural curiosity about people and objects in their world.
- Provides secure relationships.
- Spends individual time with each child every day.
Classroom Assistant:
- Must be at least 16 years of age; or have a high school diploma or GED.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Must enjoy and respect young children and their families.
- Experience working with infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
Bus Monitor:
- Must be at least 16 years of age; or have a high school diploma or GED.
- Excellent communication skills, verbally and in writing.
