Graphic Packaging International, LLC headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, is a leading provider of packaging solutions for a wide variety of products to food, beverage and other consumer products companies. The Company is one of the largest producers of folding cartons and holds a leading market position in coated-unbleached Kraft board and coated-recycled board. One of its facilities is currently seeking a CI / Quality Manager.


Position Purpose:

Leads all activities and functions driven towards execution of an effective Continuous Improvement and Quality Systems. Directs activities of suppliers, production, and customers to resolve quality problems and continuously improve the level of quality. Represents Graphic Packaging International at customer locations, evaluating and resolving technical issues. Provides leadership to Continuous Improvement Staff and Ft. Smith Management team members to optimize the role of CI within the plant. This position should be trained to fulfill the roll of Safe Quality Food Practitioner / Backup and HACCP Facilitator / Coordinator as needed depending on staffing.


Job Functions:

  • Responsible for execution of an effective closed-loop quality system driven to reduce process variation. Acts as change agent to drive continuous improvement of production and service processes to improve quality and increase efficiency include compliance of quality checks via manual or electronic GainSeeker per corporate policy.
  • Continuous Improvement and Quality Manger implements product quality plans and procedures by overseeing inspection testing requirements, frequency, responsibility and methods to assure compliance to process and product specifications. Customer specifications should be clearly defined, documented, and achieved on a daily basis.
  • Continuous Improvement and Quality Manager will be responsible for direct communications with customers and coordinating customer audits.
    • Responsible for leading the Safe Quality Food initiative within the facility as facility practitioner or back up practitioner. Only associates certified as an SQF Practitioner can approve new of modifications to Food Safety and Quality. The SQF Practitioner is responsible for ensuring proper verification and validation of the Food Safety polices, CCP’s CQP’s, pre-requisites, etc. This applies to SQF certification at Roberts and Boone Facility. Activities include: This position has full responsibility and authority to oversee the development, implementation, review, maintenance, communication, and integrity of the SQF system including Good Manufacturing Practices and Food Defense.
    • Complete training in SQF Code current version - Food Safety Code for Manufacture of Food Packaging.
    • Complete a HACCP Training course – as defined by SQF Code requirements
    • Lead and train a multidisciplinary HACCP team to implement and maintain the HACCP and Food Safety plans.
    • Update the Site Leadership team monthly on matters impacting the SQF system.
    • Lead and coordinate the Annual plant review of the Safe Quality Foods (SQF) system in its entirety.
    • Validation and Verification of SQF controls with determined frequency/schedule.
    • Develop and maintain an internal audit /schedule, and Coordinate SQF third party audits.
    • Responsible for coordination of SQF type Root Cause/ Corrective Actions activities
    • Establish and maintain Methods/criteria for monitoring, sampling, inspecting, testing, and analyzing raw materials, in-process, and finished goods.
    • Review and update training skills requirements for Safe Quality Foods.
  • Responsible for leading the HACCP initiative within the facility as facility coordinator or facility facilitator or any actions related to Prerequisite and Food Safety Programs at both Ft. Smith locations.
  • Continuous Improvement and Quality Manager will support the development and execution of customer third party color management and theory software, procedures and compliance of print management programs that fall under the customer requirements.
  • Implements practices and controls to drive an effective supplier management system. Directs activities, duties, and projects of CI personnel. Direct reports include 8 floor auditors at Roberts location, 2 floor auditors at the Converting Facility, CI Auditor that manages color targets, sample area, COAs, CI Assistant - Food Safety Pre-requisite programs, CI Assistant - Customer Specifications and Data Analysis and CI Lead / Color Theory Expert.
  • Member of SLT (Site Leadership Team). Leads safety team, multiple quality teams, conduct training on problem solving processes, cultural employee involvement committees.
  • Directly involved in responsibilities /actions related to Prerequisite and Food Safety Programs.
  • Follow all Plant rules, Processes, Hygiene, and Allergen procedures, related to production of Safe Quality Foods.
  • Participate in SQF Root Cause and Corrective Actions (from customer complaints, SQF audits, validation, and verification activities) as required.
  • Reporting of any customer complaints to persons responsible to enter into GPI’s Customer Complaint system for root cause analysis and appropriate corrective action taken.
  • Report any potentially unsafe SQF conditions or customer complaints to a person of authority to record and/or correct the situation.
  • In the absence of CI Manager, daily responsibilities will be transferred to Operations Manager or CI Lead / Color Theory Expert.

Job Specifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, advanced degree preferred and 5 years’ experience in CI related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • HACCP and SQF certification
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Proficient with SAP, Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Internet research skills
  • Working knowledge of Statistical Process Control theories
  • Experience in implementation of technical testing in production environments
  • Good general knowledge of printing and converting technologies preferred
