The Venice Chorale of Venice, Florida seeks a versatile and highly-skilled

TITLE: Conductor/Artistic Director
ORGANIZATION: The Venice Chorale of Venice FL, a 501(c)(3) www.thevenicechorale.org
JOB TYPE: Contract Employee Position; Flexible schedule with regular required hours to include Monday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and some other evenings and weekends throughout the concert season (September thru April).
SALARY: $12,000-$15,000, commensurate with experience
MINIMUM EDUCATION: Master’s Degree (preferred)
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 5+ years of choral directing experience

NOTE: Performance dates for the 2023-2024 season are already scheduled for
Sundays at 7:00 p.m. on December 12, 2023, February 25, 2024 and April 28, 2024 at the Venice Performing Arts Center (https://veniceperformingartscenter.com).

The Venice Chorale is an auditioned, highly-select large volunteer chorus embracing a broad representation of singers from the greater Sarasota County area. With a decades-long tradition of elevating the cultural experience of southwest Florida, the
Chorale traditionally maintains a roster of 70-120+ singers and performs 3-5 concerts a year. The Chorale presents engaging community-singing events and offers a Choral
Apprentice Program for high school and college-aged students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Artistic Director is required to perform the following duties and undertake the following responsibilities in a professional manner:

  • Annually develop the musical themes for the concert season in time for the marketing materials to be designed and produced prior to ticket sales.
  • Select/purchase music for the concert season in accordance with the annual music budget.
  • Conduct auditions and vocal assessments before the first rehearsal of the Fall

Semester and as needed throughout the season.

  • Effectively plan and conduct rehearsals for the Chorale according to a published schedule, as well as sections and individuals as necessary.
  • Conduct the Chorale in a minimum of three main concerts per season; each concert having one or two performances, the number of performances per concert to be determined by the Board of Directors.
  • Perform administrative duties related to roster management, attendance, singer communications, and artistic production logistics for rehearsals and performances, with the assistance of volunteer committees.
  • Supervise the work of the accompanist and the Director of the Youth Chorus.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of the Venice Performing Arts Center with the appropriate Sarasota County School District personnel and Venice Institute of

Performing Arts management, with Board of Director assistance.

  • Coordinate efforts, as necessary and desirable, with representatives of The Venice

Symphony, the Venice Concert Band, and other local arts organizations.

  • Develop and maintain a positive and professional working relationship with the members of the chorale.
  • Ability to mentor and work harmoniously with youths participating in The Venice

Chorale's Youth Programs.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
The Conductor/Artistic Director is expected to be a versatile and highly-skilled musician who can successfully demonstrate leadership of a community arts chorus and ability to work effectively with professional musicians, manage artistic concert production logistics, and represent the organization.

Desired qualifications include:

  • Master’s degree preferred, preferably in choral conducting, music performance, or music education field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be an acceptable substitute for these degrees.
  • 5+ years of choral directing experience
  • Thorough understanding of the voice and choral techniques
  • Comprehensive knowledge of choral repertoire
  • Versatility to communicate in a wide variety of musical styles
  • Significant concert production logistics management experience
  • Keyboard skills (at the level of leading a sectional from the piano) are desirable, but not required
  • Transparent and high integrity work ethic.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong time management and project management skills.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with volunteers and facilitating large groups.
  • Access to reliable transportation and the ability to work in multiple local locations for various performances throughout a season
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion practices in the organization
