Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease has no approved treatments or cures. The CMTRF seeks to catalyze investment in CMT research and accelerate the path to therapeutics. The Foundation’s singular mission is investing in novel and translational research that will lead to effective treatments and cures for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). The CMTRF convenes the only annual scientific convention dedicated solely to CMT – The Global CMT Research Convention - attracting and making connections between academics and researchers in the biotech/pharma industry.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The CMT Research Foundation is a science-based organization, so the Chief Scientific Officer is a key leadership role. The CSO is responsible for driving all scientific aspects of the organization’s mission, working closely with the entire team. The CSO oversees all CMTRF-funded research and scientific programming for the Global CMT Research Convention. Reporting to the CEO, the CSO provides guidance and advice on the direction and research priority areas for the grants program and the convention. The CSO leads the scientific communications to all stakeholders, balancing scientific accuracy and accessibility to a lay audience. The CSO also represents the science of the CMT Research Foundation publicly.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the research program
  • Working with the Scientific Advisory Board, develop and refine key research priority areas
  • Scout and identify promising research partners
  • Lead the review process for potential partnership and funding proposals
  • Support CEO in contract negotiations
  • Maintain electronic records of projects and milestone tracking
  • Lead the relationships with potential, current, and former partners
  • Manage the Scientific Advisory Board
  • Lead regular review meetings
  • Recruit new members
  • Lead the Global CMT Research Convention programming
  • Annually empanel a Scientific Program Committee (SPC) to develop the agenda for the scientific part of the convention, and consult on patient day
  • Be a key speaker throughout the convention
  • Identify invited speakers and session moderators
  • Represent the CMTRF at key industry and scientific conferences and with key stakeholders, including regulatory, scientific, industry and investor stakeholders
  • Lead scientific internal and external communications that represent the CMTRF
  • Partner with the Fundraisinginal team to educate and inspire donors
  • Advise CMTRF leadership about scientific trends and developments
  • Travel to relevant conferences and meetings. Travel is about 30%.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A PhD or similar terminal degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field (e.g., neuroscience, pharmacy, biology, etc.), with health or biomedical research experience. Successful completion of a postdoctoral fellowship or equivalent is beneficial but not required.

Experience: The ideal candidate will have several years of experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Overseeing a research program
  • Organizing programming for scientific meetings
  • Working with biotechs or pharmaceutical companies

  • Make connections with new researchers and explore how their science may be relevant to the CMTRF mission
  • Work effectively in an organization that is fully remote
  • Balance competing demands in a dynamic and growing organization, working closely with leadership and your peers to set priorities
  • Translate complex research into layman's terms for audiences ranging from donors, to patients to media
  • Skilled at effectively prioritizing and managing your own workload with input from leadership and peers

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $160,000.00 - $190,000.00 per year
